QUICK FIRE
  • Five different players hit double-digits in scoring to help the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team defeat the UVic Vikes 68-64 inside the TCC Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Hailey Merrigan was the leading scorer for TRU, finishing with 15 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kylee Koppes knocked down a trio of treys for 14 points. Olena Vasylenko had 13 points and four assists. Morgan Eichenberger tallied 11 points as well as grabbing eight rebounds and blocking a pair of shots. Micah Ramsay continued her hot weekend with ten points and six rebounds.
  • Mimi Sigue scored 15 points to lead UVic, while both Makenna Anderson (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Abigail Becker (13 points, 12 rebounds) recorded double-doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack more than held their own in the first quarter. Eichenberger led the way with seven points and finished an and-one opportunity with 17 seconds left to make the score 19-18. The Vikes found a late response however and Tegan Michel had two of her six points in the frame right at the final buzzer to give the visitors a 21-18 edge after the first quarter.
  • Ramsay and Koppes both knocked in three-pointers in the second quarter. The TRU defensive effort picked up five steals off seven Vikes' turnovers and both Eichenberger and Merrigan recorded a block. Becker responded with six points of her own however and UVic took a 36-28 lead into the halftime break.
  • A 16-7 WolfPack run to start the third quarter that featured four points apiece from Merrigan and Vasylenko gave TRU their first lead since early in the game at 44-43. The teams traded buckets the rest of the frame and TRU took a 53-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • The fourth quarter came right down to the wire. After Sigue gave UVic back the lead at 60-59 with 3:30 left in the game, a young WolfPack squad refused to let the game get away. The 'Pack outscored UVic 9-4 down the stretch, led by four points from Merrigan and three from Koppes, as TRU was able to see out the game and earn the 68-64 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The game was the program's first win over UVic since February of 2015.
  • The 68 points that WolfPack scored are their most in a Canada West game so far this season.
  • With the win TRU moves to a record of 3-6 on the season where they are currently tied with the UFV Cascades for the fifth and final playoff position in the Pacific Division.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack Associate Head Coach Joe Davis)
  • Victoria is a quality team. Our team played really hard, they handled the ball really well in the second half - we had only three turnovers in the second half - and that leads to winning behaviours so I'm happy for our team.
  • ON THE PLAY OF HAILEY MERRIGAN "We want her to be aggressive and we talked about getting her the ball in her spots and tonight she had more of a score-first mentality and I think she understands that that helps the team. I'm happy for her to see her play well today."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will hit the road for a pair of games next weekend when they take on the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.
