Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack roll to 3-0 victory over reigning national champion Bisons

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team dominated from start to finish in a battle between two teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation Friday night as they took down the No. 8 Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-19).
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • As has so often been the case this year, it was a complete team effort for the WolfPack. Keira Gent led the way with 12 kills while hitting .375 per cent. Rida Erlalelitepe added nine more as well as a trio of aces. Hail Ward finished with eight kills while Libby Meldrum racked up 35 assists, three aces, three blocks and seven digs.
  • Raya Surinx, the two-time U SPORTS Player of the Year, led the Bisons with 13 kills and four aces. Julia Martens had 22 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Erlalelitepe (six kills) and Gent (four) combined for 10 kills as the WolfPack held off a big Bisons push to take the first set. The WolfPack dominated the set early, a 10-3 WolfPack run that saw four kills and an ace from Erlalelitepe gave TRU a quick 21-12 advantage. Manitoba did their best to bounce back with Surinx firing in four aces to lead a Bisons run that saw them come all the way back to knot the set up at 21-21. The 'Pack refused to let the set slip away though and scored four-straight points to take it 25-21.
  • The WolfPack rolled in the second set. Hail Ward led the way with four kills and the WolfPack held to Bisons to a negative hitting percentage en route to the 25-11 victory.
  • TRU took the lead at 8-7 in the third set and never looked back. A kill and an ace back-to-back from Erlalelitepe forced Manitoba into taking a timeout with TRU up 12-9. The 'Pack never let the Bisons get to within two the rest of the way as bookended a block from Meldrum and Maria Dancheva with a pair of aces to send TRU to the 25-19 victory.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm)
  • I think we did a good job on the service line, we put them under some pressure and kept them out of system most of the night. I thought our block and defence did a pretty good job of playing fairly clean.
  • They are missing some weapons and that changes their team for sure. This can be a hard building to come into, it's kind of big and hollow so I think tomorrow they will come back more like how they did in the third set and play cleaner.
  • Overall, I'm happy with our performance.
  • Libby spread the ball well and kept Manitoba guessing on defence. Keira and Rida both played well, Olivia Andulajevic had a good game tonight, Madison Maichin came in and did her job well so this wasn't one player having a huge performance it was a balanced team effort tonight.

NOTABLE
  • The result moves TRU to 9-2 on the season where they top the entire Canada West conference with 27 points.
  • TRU has now won five straight games.
  • The WolfPack entered the weekend ranked 10th in the nation while Manitoba was ranked 8th.
  • TRU had 11 aces to Manitoba's five.

UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will be back in action tomorrow evening when they face off at 3:00 p.m. inside the TCC.
