The Kamloops Sports Council hosted its 30th annual awards ceremony Friday night. Originally scheduled for May 23rd but canceled due to the pandemic, the award winners and Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame inductees were announced via an online broadcast.
Local athletes who made a significant contribution to sport in the 2019 calendar year were eligible to qualify for awards. Men's soccer captain Jan Pirretas Glasmacher exemplified that by winning the 'University Award', an award for Kamloops residents who are enrolled in university full-time.
The fourth-year defender has been a stalwart of the team's backline and is a model student-athlete for younger players. Jan's dedication and skill were also recognized when he was selected as a first-round pick by Pacific FC in the Canadian Premier League's U SPORTS draft back in November.
Carmin Mazzotta, head coach of the recently discontinued cross-country team, received the 'Award of Excellence'. Determined by the committee, it is awarded to someone whose contributions and accomplishments in sport go above and beyond. Not only was Carmin's work with the WolfPack cross-country running team exemplary, he excelled in his role while also battling cancer.
Team Black from the WolfPack cheerleading squad was nominated for two awards - 'Team of the Year' which went to the SKSS girls basketball team, and 'International Excellence' which was awarded to WolfPack alumni Greg Stewart.
