WolfPack partner with SICRA to launch club rodeo team

KAMLOOPS – In what will be rare among B.C. universities, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have partnered with the Southern Interior College Rodeo Association to start a competitive club WolfPack rodeo team.

The partnership will provide students enrolled at TRU with the opportunity to participate in competitive rodeo events taking place throughout the northwest United States.

"We are thrilled to partner with Thompson Rivers University to bring a dynamic and competitive rodeo program to our students," said team head coach and president of the SICRA Sean Bennett. "This collaboration is a testament to our shared commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement. We look forward to seeing our athletes thrive both in the arena and in their academic pursuits."

With a long history of rodeo in the Kamloops and Thompson-Cariboo regions, the team provides an opportunity for those who grew up competing in rodeo sport to continue pursuing their passion while obtaining their post-secondary education.

"I was impressed by the vision of Sean and the SICRA board to deliver a meaningful experience for rodeo student-athletes with an emphasis on community, inclusivity, and history," said WolfPack director of athletics and recreation, Curtis Atkinson. "I look forward to seeing the growth of the program, and the new opportunities for students, under SICRA's leadership."

The rodeo club has successfully bid for membership in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, a governing body of collegiate rodeo in America.

Open to both men and women, the team will compete in the Northwest Region of the NIRA, with scheduled competitions in Idaho, California, Washington State and Oregon.
