Men's Volleyball: Pack lose to Wesmen in battle for third place in the Canada West

"We didn't play with any emotion." The words of Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Mens Volleyball coach Pat Hennelly after seeing his side drop a three games to one decision to the defending CIS Champion Winnipeg Wesmen. Winnipeg took over sole possession of third place in the Canada West with a 25-16, 15-25, 26-24, 25-20 decision before around 300 fans at the Tournament Capital Center. "We just didn't come to play tonight," Hennelly stated. "Winnipeg is a team which sits back and waits for you to make mistakes. We let down in the third set and couldn't recover."

For his part, Wesmen Coach Larry McKay praised the opposition. "TRU has a good team. We were lucky to win."

The Wesmen were led by 5th year Middle Ben Schellenberg (Winnipeg, Man) as he scored 21 points and had 19 kills.

In the pivitol third set, The WolfPack led by as much as three early on, but saw the Wesmen rally for three straight points to take it.

Outside hitter Troy Jaggard (4th year, Calgary, Alberta) led the way for TRU on offense with 20 poiints and 17 kills. Rookie Gord Perrin (Creston, B.C.) continued to impress with a strong showing on the floor.

CIS Points leader Robin Schoebel (2nd year, Monaco) had 13.5 points. He and 3rd year outside hitter Brent Hall (Red Deer, Alberta) each had two service aces.

The Wesmen improve to 7 and 2 on the season. The WolfPack fall to 6 and 3.

The two squads will play again tommorrow (Thurs Jan 3rd). The game will double as a CIS encounter and as part of the inaugral "Little Caesars Hot and Ready" Mens Volleyball Classic. The five team tournament includes Pepperdine Wave of the NCAA, the University of Laval Rouge et Or and Trinity Western University.

"I expect us to play better tommorrow," said Hennelly adding he thinks the Wesmen will come out with a better effort as well.

The tournament opens at 5 pm with Laval taking on Trinity Western followed by the Wesmen and WolfPack battling in round two.

The Trinity Western University men's volleyball opened 2008 with a 3-0 loss to the Université Laval Rouge et Or Thursday night at the Thompson Rivers University inaugural Little Caesars Hot and Ready Men's Volleyball Tournament at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, B.C.

The Rouge et Or had command of most of the match as they defeated the Spartans 25-20,25-21, 26-24.

First year left side Karl De Grandpre (Pierreville, QC) led the way with two service aces and 15 points scored for Laval, while Thierry Lavigne (4th year, Rockland, Ont) added nine points. For the Spartans it was fifth year right side Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge, B.C.) leading the way with 12 points on nine kills, two aces, two blocks and seven digs while first year outside Marc Howatson (Victoria, B.C.) added nine points on six kills, three blocks, four digs and one ace.

Next up for the Spartans is Thompson Rivers at 11 a.m. on Friday morning.

Men's Volleyball: Wesmen take second straight from WolfPack

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen proved why they are the defending CIS champions as they took the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 25-22,25-18,19-25,25-15 before over 400 people at the Tournament Capital Center in Kamloops. The game not only counted towards points in the Canada West, but it also was part of the inaugural Little Caesars Hot and Ready Men's Volleyball Tournament.

"I thought both teams were a little better tonight," said Wesmen Coach Larry McKay. "It was a little more contested with attack and block because the serve and receive were both better."

In the first set, the Wesmen were up by 5 at one point before the Wolfpack closed the cap to two following big kills by rookie Gord Perrin (1st year, Creston, B.C.) and Robin Schoebel (2nd year, Monaco). Schoebel wound up with 14 kills on the night and led offensively again for the WolfPack with 16.5 points.

"I expected us to be better," stated WolfPack coach Pat Hennelly. "We had a big run in the third set, we dominated," Hennelly added. "It was a snapshot of our season. We have either been very good or average to bad. Other teams haven't made us pay as much. Winnipeg did tonight."

Senior Ben Shellenberg (Winnipeg, Manitoba) again was the dominant player for the Wesmen, who moved into a tie for second in the Canada West with UBC. Both clubs have records of 8 and 2. Schellenberg had 14 kills and averaged 18 points. Fourth year outside Alan Ahow (Winnipeg, Manitoba) had a strong night as well with 11 kills and 13.5 points.

The Wolfpack fall to 6 and 4 on the season.

Both clubs are back in action tommorrow as the Little Caesars Tournament continues. In earlier action from Thursday (Jan 3), the University of Laval Rouge et Or defeated the Trinity Western Spartans in three straight sets: 25-20,25-21, 26-24.

Freshmen Left Side Karl De Grandpre (Pierreville, QC) led the way with two service aces and 15 points scored. Thierry Lavigne (4th year, Rockland, Ont) contribued with 9 points. For the Spartans it was 5th year Right Side Steve Rogalsky leading the way with 12 points.

Game Stories - January 4

Men's Volleyball: Pepperdine wins first game of tournament against Laval

The Pepperdine Wave of California got off to a quick start in their first game at the inaugral Little Caesars Hot and Ready University Men's Volleyball Tournament. The number two ranked team in the current NCAA top 10 downed the Laval Rouge et Or of Quebec 25-23,25-14,26-24.

Austrailian junior Paul Carroll led the way for the Wave. The outside hitter had 13 kills and had 14.5 points.

Laval started to gain momentum as the match went on. Their top player was 4th year Left Side Thierry Lavigne (Rockland, Ont), who had 17 kills and 18 points. Freshman left side Karl de Grandpre (Pierrreville, QC) contributed with 11 points.

Pepperdine next plays the defending Canadian National Champion University of Winnipeg Wesmen this evening (5 PM PDT). Laval, whos record drops to 1 and 1, meet up in the feature game of the evening (730 PM PDT) against the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. The Pack lost their tournament opener Thursday night to the Wesmen.

Men's Volleyball: WolfPack drop to 0-2 at own tournament

The host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack continue to look for their first victory in the inaugural Little Caesars Hot and Ready Mens University Volleyball Tournament. The Wolfpack dropped a 3-1 decision to the Spartans of Trinity Western 25-18,30-28,26-28, 25-13.

"It was a good match," stated Spartan Coach Ben Josephson. "Both teams got to mix their lineups a bit. I thought our guys came out focussed. Thompson Rivers struggled a bit at the start but were coming on late."

Both squads entered the match looking for their first victory of the tourney. The Spartans had dropped a 3 set decision to the Laval Rouge et Or while the Wolfpack came out on the short end of a three set to one decision to the Winnipeg Wesmen. Both those matches were played on Thursday (Jan 3).

In the first set, the Spartans led by no more than four until late. The second set saw the Wolfpack battle from a 24-19 deficit to tie things up before falling short. "I think there was some great emotion at times," said TRU bench boss Pat Hennelly. " Unfortunately on both sides of the ball, we touched the net 20 times. Maybe its a symptom of the part of the season that we a re in. Neither Trinity or ourselves were at the top of their game."

Hennelly credited the play of third year outside hitter Brent Hall (Red Deer, Alberta). Hennelly thought he had one of his strongest games.

The WolfPack seemed to lose a bit of focus in the fourth set. Hennelly thought some crucial errors by rookie Stefan Savoie (Winnipeg, Manitoba) contributed to that demise. "At times we got what we wanted out of this (the match), the one close game we lost on a pure shank in the second set. I want that back. We never had a chance to go after it."

Hennelly added it took a long time for his squad to get their emotions up for the contest.

Offensively, 5th year right side Steve Rogalsky led the way with 12 kills for the Spartans, who now take on the number 2 team in the NCAA: Pepperdine Wave of California Saturday Afternoon (Jan 5).

"Marc Howatson was probably our best player today," stated Josephson. "I thought he had a great game. He struggled in the 3rd set but bounced back in the 4th. Especially for an 18 year old kid." Howatson (1st year, Victoria, B.C.) had 22.5 points. Josephson gave credit to one other player. "Our setter Ben Ball (Abbotsford, BC) was fantastic tonight. It was the best blocking match he's had in a while."

Rookie outside hitter Gord Perrin (Creston, B.C.) had 10 kills and 10.5 points for the WolfPack.

TRU rested a number of their starters including Robin Shoebel of Monaco as Hennelly elected to give more of his bench some much needed playing time.

"At some point, Tim Flannigan (5th year, Prince George BC) and Brent Hall are going to play a role. We saw some stuff that we have on tape now and can help them develop. You can't get that in practice: those pressure situations. In a lot of cases, they were matched up with Trinity's starters."

The WolfPack will try and regroup for a match later tonight against Laval. The Rouge et Or lost in three sets earlier today to Pepperdine 25-23,25-14,26-24. That's set for 7:30 pm at the Tournament Capital Centre. The Tournament winds up Saturday.

Women's Volleyball: WolfPack open 2008 on right foot

"We're approaching this as a whole new season." That's how Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's volleyball coach Carrie Barrett described her team's first match of 2008. Playing a University of Winnipeg Wesmen club with an identical 2 and 8 record, the WolfPack pushed them to the full 5 sets before prevailing 23-25,28-26,25-22,22-25,15-13.

"With a young group of athletes, you tend to take that roller coaster a bi,t" Barrett stated. "You play to the level that you are pushed. Thats what happened tonight. I thought Winnipeg did a great job of pushing us a little bit to see what we were up to. They pulled back the reigns and our team stepped up and took a hold of that."

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Frayne amazed her hometown fans leading the Wolfpack with 17 kills and 20.5 points.

4th year outside hitter Richelle Walton (Langley, B.C.) had 16 kills and 16.5 points as well for TRU who welcomed Brazilian right side Dani Silva into the line-up.

"A great athlete," assessed Barrett. "She hasn't played with us in a game and was a little jittery. I pulled her for Kelly Asieson (1st Year Richmond, B.C.) to give her a breather. But she came back later and was solid."

Winnipeg (now 2 and 9) was led by senior Nicola Dirks (Winnipeg, Manitoba) with 26 kills and 28 points.

The same two teams go at it Saturday (Jan 5) at the Tournament Capital Center in Kamloops. It starts at 6 pm.

Regina outscored Thompson Rivers 22-11 in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead into halftime and cruised to victory in the second half.

Jessica Lynch has turned into a model of consistency for the Cougars. Lynch's game-high 17 points tonight marked the seventh straight game - including the non-conference tournament in Saskatoon - that the fourth-year forward has notched at least 10 points. She also had four offensive rebounds in 22 minutes on the floor for Regina.

Thompson Rivers will travel to Brandon (0-11) for a Saturday night affair that will see one of the league's two winless teams earn their first victory of the season.

Men's Basketball: Cougars edge above .500 mark after win over Thompson Rivers

REGINA, Sask. - Led by Paul Schubach and Bryden Wright, the University of Regina's men's basketball team notched a 99-65 win over Thompson Rivers on Friday night in a Canada West regular season game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Schubach went 9-for-12 from the field and had a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Wright scored 22 points and dished out six assists during the win.

The Cougars pulled away from the WolfPack early in the game, seizing a 29-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. Regina extended the lead to 24 by halftime, and was never really pushed by a Thompson Rivers squad that was plagued by three foul outs.

Kris Heshka fell just one point shy of landing the game's only double-double, finishing the night with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Paul Gareau provided his usual spark off the bench, piling up 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in just 17 minutes on the floor.

The WolfPack's Drew Bleth scored a team-high 19 points in a losing cause. Matt Perry, Brent Traxel, and Chris Vanderweide all fouled out in the second half for Thompson Rivers. Steve Christie suffered a similar fate for Regina.

The win improves Regina's record to 6-5. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday night against Fraser Valley (5-8), which lost 82-59 to Brandon on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the CKHS.

The Lady Pack won over the Wesmen in five sets last night (Fri Jan 4).

Men's Volleyball: Spartans lose five set match to Pepperdine Waves

The Trinity Western University Spartans men's volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-22,19-25,25-23,19-25,12-15) to the Pepperdine University Waves in an afternoon match at the Little Caesars Hot and Ready Volleyball Classic hosted by Thompson Rivers University. Spartans leftside Mikiah Schalk (Red Deer, Alta.) led all hitters with 27 kills, and also added 10 digs and two blocks.

"Mikiah Schalk had one of the most impressive matches of the season for us," said TWU head coach Ben Josephson. "He was very good, and Josh Doorenbal (Edmonton) played well from the right side as we shuffled lineups a bit."

The Spartans trailed just once in the first set 10-11, but rallied and won 25-22. They briefly led the second set 5-4, but the Waves took a 6-5 lead on back-to-back Spartan attack errors, and would cruise to a 19-25 set victory to even the match.

In the third TWU again lost the lead at 5-4 and trailed 14-16 at the technical timeout, but would rally late in the set to win 25-23. The Spartans got down 1-5 in the fourth, but came back to take their only lead 8-7 at the first technical timeout on a David Vander Ende (Surrey, B.C.) service ace. The Waves took the lead back and held a close lead 14-16, and would pull away to win 19-25.

In the deciding fifth set TWU twice held one point leads before a Grant Hilling (Newport Beach, Calif.) kill put the Waves ahead for good at 8-7, as they would go on to win the set 12-15 and take the match in five sets.

Doornenbal, playing out of position on the right side, was second on the team in kills with six. Pepperdine was led in kills by J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif.) with 14.

TWU is taking advantage of the exhibition tournament to get playing time for their entire roster, as All-Canadian Steve Rogalsky (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and Canadian National team middle Doug Van Spronsen (Dawson Creek, B.C.) sat out this match.

The Spartans final match of the tournament was tonight against the Winnipeg Wesmen. TWU's next Canada West match is against the University of Manitoba Bisons Saturday, January 12 at 3 p.m. in Winnipeg.

Men's Volleyball: Wesmen win inaugural Little Caesars Hot and Ready University men's volleyball tournament

The defending CIS Champion Winnipeg Wesmen captured the first ever Little Caesars Hot and Ready University mens volleyball tournament. The Wesmen and Pepperdine University Wave of California each finished with records of 3 and 1, Winnipeg losing their final round robin game to the Trinity Western Spartans of Langley in four sets . Pepperdine's only defeat came at the hands of the Wesmen on Friday night (Jan 4) 22-25,25-13,25-19,25-20.

Pepperdine closed out the tournament with a three set victory 25-18,25-20,25-19 over the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. Over a thousand people took in the match. It was estimated to be the largest crowd ever to see a volleyball game in Kamloops history.

The Wave, ranked 2nd in the NCAA top 10 poll got a big performance from Austrailian Paul Carroll (Forster, Australia). The 6-7 Junior outside hitter had 13 kills and 18 points. 6-8 Freshman Corey Riecks (Auburn, Calif.) contributed 11 points for the Wave.

"It just happened that Paul Carroll got hot serving and that was the difference in the match," stated Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy, an Olympic Gold Medallist and member of the U.S. Volleyball Hall of Fame.

"We are still battling a little bit of head stuff," stated WolfPack Coach Pat Hennelly afterwards. "Pepperdine is an excellent team and they defended incredibly. But it seems like we are at 80 or 90 per cent. I don't know if holding back is the right word, but we need to play with more flow and emotion."

4th year outside hitter Troy Jaggard (Calgary, Alberta) had 12 kills and 13.5 points for Thompson Rivers, who return to league play January 18th and 19th against UBC. "He had an exceptional night," stated Hennelly. "We can take something from this. We can defend like those guys, and we've seen a level of play higher than ours and that's what we wanted."

The WolfPack (number 7 in the CIS top 10) finished with a 1 and 3 record.

Trinity Western (8th in the CIS top 10) wound up with a 2 and 2 record. The University of Laval Rouge et Or were 1 and 3 as well.

Winnipeg and Pepperdine dominated the post tournament awards as well: 5th year opposite Ben Schellenberg (Winnipeg, Man.) of the Wesmen was named Tournament MVP. His teammate, 5th year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider (Winnipeg, Man.) was a tournament all-star. Pepperdine's junior setter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura,California) and junior outside hitter Paul Carroll (Forster, Australia) were tournament all-stars along with TRU's Martin Korsbak (2nd year middle, Nyborg, Denmark), 1st year outside Marc Howatson (Victoria, B.C.) from Trinity Western and third year libero Nicolas Quirion (Arthabaska, Q.C.) of Laval.

The question now is whether or not this tournament will go ahead next year. Hennelly hopes it does. "The word is out there that we are hosting a high profile event. People talk about this in forums. There is a sense of excitement about this. For us to be at that level (Winnipeg and Pepperdine) we need to have events like this. I hope our administration feels its worthwhile to spend the money on this stuff."

The magnitude of the event wasn't lost on Pepperdine's Dunphy. "The calibre of Canadian University volleyball is tremendous," he stated. "Maybe 15 or 20 years ago, there was probably only one or two good Canadian teams. But we've played a lot of schools from here of late. Every match is a battle." When asked if he would like to see more NCAA teams coming to this tourney in the future, Dunphy smiled and said "I hope I'm the only one and they don't invite anyone else. This is the best kept secret around."

For Pat Hennelly and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. It's a secret they hope doesn't remain so for very long.

Women's Volleyball: WolfPack women play poor hosts to Winnipeg

It was home sweet home for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack womens volleyball team this weekend. They swept the University of Winnipeg Lady Wesmen to up their record in the Canada West to 4 and 8. After a 5 set victory on Friday (Jan 4), the WolfPack did it to the Wesmen again on Saturday. The scores were 25-13,11-25,16-25, 25-16, 15-13.

"I felt Winnipeg came out a lot stronger than they did yesterday," exclaimed TRU coach Carrie Barrett. "Our girls did really well from the start pressing them. We served pretty good. They had trouble on serve receive. We maintained ours and that gave us an advantage."

Something happened when the two teams traded sides. Winnipeg quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Barrett could have called a time out but: " Sometimes I let the team go. We are young and we need to gain that experience. We need to grow in pressure situations."

The WolfPack were led by 4th year outside hitter Richelle Walton (Langley, B.C.). She had 9 kills and 14 points. TRU welcomed back 2nd year middle Laura Battison (Langley, B.C.) from injury and she didn't disappoint.

"She did great," said Barrett. "She started off really strong with a ton of blocks. She got a stuff block on the third point of the game." Battison had 4 block assists and had 11 points.

The Wesmen (now 2 and 10) got 14.5 points a piece from freshmen middle Lauren Sears (Truro, N.S.) and 3rd year left side Marlee Bragg (Winnipeg, Man).

"Heartbreaking isn't the word I would use. It would be disappointing," a sombre Winnipeg coach Diane Scott said afterwards. Scott is into her 13th season at the helm of the program. "I thought Thompson Rivers played tenacious ball. They had desire to win and never gave up. They played well as a team and found ways to get kills."

For Scott, it's back to the drawing board. "We need to work on the desire to win. The ability to play to win as opposed to avoid losing. I have a very talented group of athletes. They are very capable of playing but they aren't right now."

The WolfPack have a while to savour their two victories. They don't play until January 18th when they meet UBC. Barrett is relishing the time off.

"We are still hurting. The girs are still coming off breaks, strains and sprains. I'm happy to have it at this stage."

Women's Basketball: WolfPack women play poor hosts to Winnipeg

BRANDON, MB " A heartbreaking loss for the Brandon Lady Bobcats.

Despite holding a lead after three quarters for the first time all season, the Cats dropped an 83-71 decision to the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Saturday night at the BU Gym.

"I don't think we lost the game in the fourth quarter," said Brandon head coach Jaime Hickson. "I think we lost the game in the first, the second, the third, and the fourth. I think rebounding absolutely killed us. We didn't attend to that mentally: once again, it's mental errors kicking in, and we have to realize that small things make a big difference."

Kaitlyn Widsten led the way for TRU with 24 points, while Sarah Cameron delivered 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Rookie Dayna Prost notched a career high 20 points for the Cats, shooting 6-9 from three-point range. Allie Butz added 15 points, while Melanie Thompson scored 12 and Jayla Bosquet added 11.

It was Brandon's sixth straight conference victory, and improved their record to 11-1.

Yul Michel added 13 points for the Cats, while Yuri Whyms notched 11 points and 13 rebounds. Adam Hartman and Erik Holm added 11 and 10 points respectively.
