While the ‘Pack won’t be returning to Kamloops with two wins like head coach Don Schulz hoped, the team made Eastern Washington University earn the 4-3 overtime win Saturday (Nov. 17) night.
TRU managed to capture three of four points in their back-to-back night show down in Washington over the weekend. Despite a short bench the boys proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League.
The weekend increased their regular season stats to 4-4-0-1 in 9 games with an equal number of points. TRU and EWU are tied for second place in league standings with only the undefeated Selkirk team ahead of them.

“We were able to put together four solid periods, but unfortunately got sidetracked a little in the second. There was some questionable refereeing, but it was how we reacted to this that caused us to come unglued and that is ultimately why we lost,” said Schulz.

Shane Mainprize faced 39 shots in a losing effort. But the TRU offence reciprocated by getting 40 shots off against EWU goalie Cash Ulrich.
The first period ended 2-0 with Thompson Rivers University in the lead.
The ‘Pack was unable to capitalize in the second and Eastern Washington put away two power play goals and the teams headed into the third with a tie on their hands.
TRU got the first goal in the third, but gave up another power play goal to send the game into overtime minutes. Jake Flynn got the game winner for Eastern Washington.
“Overall it was a pretty gutsy weekend for a short staffed team of four defense and ten forwards,” said Schulz.

Nathan Michaels played the game with four stiches in his lower lip and Lucaus Daoust pushed through the pain of a taped thumb that was originally believed to be fractured.

TRU’s penalty kill was 9 for 10. They were unable to make use of 4 power play opportunities.
“Our penalty kill vastly improved. What we worked on in practice sank in and showed this weekend, all the hard work paid off for us. We were so close to having a four point weekend, but energy wise we just lost it,” said Schulz.
The second star of the game was TRU’s Alessio Tomassetti.
