WolfPack Badminton Win 3 Bronze At PAC WEST Championship

2011-12 Badminton team shot Sept 2011 Athletes from Douglas College came away with medals in each of the individual disciplines as the 2011-12 PAC WEST Badminton championships drew to a close at the gymnasium at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops on Sunday (February 19). They captured three golds and two silvers. The golds came in women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.  The silver medals were won in women’s doubles and men’s singles.  The host WolfPack team won three bronze medals-in women's singles, women's doubles and men's singles. RuiLan Huang (4th year, Burnaby, BC), who was chosen as the PAC WEST female player of the year, captured the gold medal. She downed Alisa Young (1st year, Vancouver, BC) of Langara 21-8,21-8 to finish the round robin at 5 and 0.    Kia Lidster (4th year, Kamloops, BC)  of Thompson Rivers University captured the bronze medal.  She was 3 and 2. They defeated the team of Willis Knee (4th year, Richmond, BC) and Andy Wong (1st year, Vancouver, BC).  The scores were 21-17, 21-17.   Mark Chang (1st year, Burnaby, BC) and Tony Chen (1st year, Surrey, BC) went home with the bronze medal by going 1 and 2. The other Douglas gold was captured by the mixed doubles team of  Charmagne Yeung (4th year, Surrey, BC) and Logan Campbell (2nd year, Calgary, AB).  They downed Kwanten’s Michelle Simard (3rd year, Surrey, BC) and Bradley Low (1st year, Vancouver, BC) 21-6,21-12.   Yeung and Campbell, who was named the PAC WEST male player of the year went unbeaten in five matches to capture the gold. Team BC 2012 Team BC (Andrew Snucins photo) The other gold medals went to Luke Couture (3rd year, St John, NB) of Langara in men’s singles and the duo of Veronica Yeung (1st year, Vancouver, BC) and Raosalynn Chong (1st year, Burnaby, BC) of Capilano University in women’s doubles. Couture  went 5-0 in the round robin and downed Bob Sharma (1st year, New Westminster, BC) of Douglas 21-14,19-21,21-19 in a battle of the contenders. Marlee Mertens (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC) and Anica Arduini (3rd year, Kamloops, BC) of Thompson Rivers University captured the bronze medal going 3 and 2. trubadminton5 Bronze medal winners Marlee Mertens and Anica Arduini (Andrew Snucins photo) The gold medal winners will form Team BC for the upcoming Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Badminton Championships.  The silver medal winners will comprise the host Team BC squad. Team BC Host 2012 Team BC Host (Andrew Snucins photo) The CCAA Nationals will be held at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops from March 1-3 rd.  Marc Petreman of the Langara College Falcons was selected as the PAC WEST coach of the year. Petreman, Campbell and Huang will now vye for CCAA Coach and Player of the Year honors.
