Women's soccer lose big match at UNBC

WolfPack midfielder Camryn Curts
Box Score The chances of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack  women's soccer team making it to the Canada West post season took a major stumble on Friday night (Oct 19).

The WolfPack were beaten by the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 2-0 in Canada West play Friday (Oct 19).  That loss, coupled with MacEwan's 4-1 win over the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat means that any chance of TRU finishing in the sixth in the Pacific Division are slim and none.

Both the Heat and the WolfPack have a match left with UBCO holding a one point advantage.

SYNOPSIS:

The Timberwolves scored a goal in each half en route to the victory.  They got goals from Ashley Volk and Hanna Emmond as they move to a point behind the WolfPack in the Pacific Division standings.  Thompson Rivers has a 3-9-1 record for 10 points.  UNBC sits at 2-8-3 with nine points.  A victory by the Timberwolves on Sunday (Oct 21) over UBCO, coupled with a defeat or a tie by TRU against MacEwan would put UNBC into the final playoff spot, a point ahead of UBCO (who have 11 points with one match to play.)

THEY SAID IT (post match comments):

TRU head coach Kelly Shantz:

On game:" Despite the result, I am so incredibly proud of the way the team is playing. It's such good quality soccer for long periods of time. We make the same mistakes other teams make. Full marks to UNBC. They had some chances and took two of them well to get their goals. The rest of the time was spent seeing our team fighting and moving the ball properly, quickly and creating chances and shots on net.  Their goaltender made a couple of good saves on balls that were difficult to handle. We are not just getting any bounces. Corner kick after corner kick that people got their heads on.  The ball would go off shin pads and dribbling wide. Our spirits are good. I am so very, very proud of how hard this team worked today-for 90 minutes. Cassie Morris was our player of the game.  It was impossible to choose between her and Camryn Curts who established herself as a warrior and a 90 minute player on this team. Marlie Rittinger continued to influence the rest of the roster and launched a couple of long range shots that glanced off the bar or forced incredible save.  Around them was terrific work from Marisa Mendonca, Natalie Verdiel. Our rookies: Ainsley Grether played well tonight. Kat Walkley.  Julia Burkart at the backend. Danielle Robertson couldn't do much to stop either goal and stopped a penalty shot along the way to keep us in it at 2-0.  We are still in it with MacEwan beating UBCO. We need to go in there and win. We have everything to play for. The spirits are high. The girls know they put in a solid 90 minutes and should be proud of themselves.  Hope they get some reward and hopefully it comes on Sunday."

UP NEXT:

The WolfPack will hop the bus and head to Edmonton, Alberta for their final regular season match. They will meet the MacEwan University Griffins on Sunday (Oct 21, 2018).  The teams met in Kamloops to begin the season.  MacEwan won 2-1.
