The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's basketball team have reached a mark that they didn't the entire Canada West regular season in 2018-19. That is achieving a fifth victory.
The Pack went to 5-2 on the season as they scored a dramatic 68-66 win at home on Friday night (Nov 22) over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.
Leilani Carney (5
th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) scored a late three point shot and then went to the foul line with six seconds left to ice the victory.
Carney wound up with a team high 20 points on the night for TRU.
Emma Piggin (5
th year, guard, Kamloops, BC) had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Maria Mongomo (5
th year, forward, Las Palmas, Spain) had a career night to lead UNBC. She had 29 points and 16 rebounds. Emma vanBruinessen(4
th year, forward, Leduc, AB) had 11 points and 15 rebounds while Alina Shakirova (3
rd year, guard, Moscow, Russia) had 11 points.
The Timberwolves fall to 2-5.
SYNOPSIS:
The Timberwolves turned over the ball seven times in the first quarter compared to four for the WolfPack, who led by one point (14-13) after the first period.
Brooklyn Golt (2
nd year, post, Langley, BC) had five points for Thompson Rivers while Carney added four points. Piggin contributed four rebounds (two at each end). UNBC's top scorers were Mongomo with six points and four rebounds while vanBruinessen added four

Mongomo was huge in the second half for the Timberwolves. She had 12 points and five rebounds as they held a four point advantage (36-34) going into the dressing room at half time despite turning the ball over 11 times to the WolfPack's nine. Piggin had eight points in that quarter for Thompson Rivers while Jordin Wlkinson (4
th year, guard, North Battleford, SK) added four points in that period.
The see saw battle continued in the third quarter. The Pack cut the deficit to a single point Piggin's three pointer with 8:19 left gave TRU a 37-36 advantage. The Timberwolves owned a 55-50 advantage going into the final quarter buoyed by Mongomo's 22 points Piggin had eight points herself in that quarter to have 16 poing into the final period.
The Piggin/Mongomo show continued in that final period with both players impressing the fans with their skills. UNBC led by six with six minutes remaining (59-53). With 42.4 seconds left, Carney hit a three pointer to tie things at 63. At the other end, with 13 seconds left, Mongomo was fouled and went to the line and sank three shots to tie things at 66. But with six seconds left Carney was sent to the line and drained her two foul shots to give Thompson Rivers the victory.

The Timberwolves and WolfPack will close out their weekend series tomorrow (Sat Nov 23) at the Tournament Capital Centre. The two teams will play the 'early game' on Saturday and hit the court at 5 PM PDT. It will be TRUSU Food Bank night again on Saturday.
The WolfPack will close out the pre-Christmas portion of their Canada West season next weekend (Nov 29-30) against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Both of those games will be at the Tournament Capital Centre.
