The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack continued play at the FOG men's volleyball tournament in Edmonton on Friday (Sept 20).
The WolfPack lost exhibition matches to the NAIT Ooks of the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference and the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
Against the Ooks, the Pack lost 3-2 (scores 21-25,23-25,26-24,26-24,12-15). The Golden Bears took down Thompson Rivers 3-1 (scores 22-25,20-25,25-21,19-25)
The WolfPack have a record of 0-3 in an event where head coach
Pat Hennelly is getting his entire 23 man roster into match play and trying different combinations.
Against NAIT, Hennelly stated, "The team played well but were inconsistent and showed their inexperience. It was good to see the first year guys :Cole Johnson (Prince George, BC), Corbin Ockerman along with Kobby Nyarko (Calgary, AB) and Brody Kopec (Red Deer, AB). Dylan Vanspankeren (Calgary, AB) passed solid in the libero position."
In the match with the Ooks, Kopec had 14 kills with Nyarko chipping in with nine. Second year setter Sam Elgert (Athabasca, AB) had 25 assists and four service errors.
In the late match Friday against the Golden Bears,
Sam Taylor Parks (5
th year, middle, Kelowna, BC) had five blocks and eight kills.
Charlie Bringloe (5
th year, outside hitter, Waterloo, ON) had 14 kills, a hit efficiency of 48.3 with two blocks.
Hennelly stated, " Unfortunately,
Ryan Hampe (2
nd year, outside hitter, Prince George, BC) hurt his leg in the first set but Brody came in and played some very steady volleyball for us. We played much better, cleaner volleyball than yesterday and picked up our defensive intensity and blocking."
The WolfPack play two more matches as the exhibition tournament wraps up on Saturday (Sept 21). TRU will play the SAIT Trojans of Calgary (ACAC) and the Calgary Dinos.
