Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Sports Information Officer

Women's Basketball drop below .500 after loss to Cougars

The 2020 portion of the Canada West women's basketball season for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack began with a set back. The Pack saw their record slip below .500 as they were beaten by the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars.
The score at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday (Jan 3) was 86-61.

The Cougars move to 4 and 5 on the year while Thompson Rivers stands at 5-6.

Mount Royal was led on offense Jenika Martens.  The first year forward from Le Crete, Alberta had a double double with 27 points and 11 rebounds.   Sarah Rinksy (2nd year, point guard, Leduc, AB) had 14 points and eight defensive rebounds.
TRU was led by Leilani Carney (5th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) and Jordon Haggerty (3rd year, guard, Saskatoon, SK) with 16 points a piece. Haggerty was named "The Den Leader of the Pack player of the game".
This was B100 Radio night where the radio station gave out money to fans with the best WolfPack howl.

SYNOPSIS:
Thompson Rivers jumped to an early 5-2 lead but the Cougars took over  with 5:28 left in the first and wound up leading by 10 at the end of the first period (23-13). They were led by Martens with eight points.  TRU had four a piece from Brooklyn Golt (2nd year, post, Langley, BC) and Carney .

The WolfPack cut the Cougars lead to eight points by half time (44-36) as TRU's bench outgunned Mount Royals 16-11 in that second period.   Martens had 12 points at the half while  Rinksy  had 11.   Carney led TRU gunners with nine points in the first half.

The Cougars came out tough in the third quarter and increased their lead to ten at one point but the Pack reduced it to six with the score being 56-50.  Thompson Rivers scoring seven points off turnovers in that third period compared to two for Mount Royal.

The Cougars put on an offensive show in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Pack 30-11 in the final frame.

The WolfPack did outscore the Cougars off turnovers 15-13.  Mount Royal's bench outscored TRU's 51-32 in the contest.
