Members of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack cross country team set some school records as they competed at the annual Van Ryswyk indoor track meet held at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops this weekend.
Calum Carrigan (2
nd year, Kamloops, BC) set a new school record of 9:16 in the three kilometer run on Friday night (Feb 27). Teammate
Liam McGrath (3
rd year, Vernon, BC) clocked the third top time in TRU history and had a personal best as he crossed the line in a time of 9:38.
On Saturday (Feb 28), Carrigan and Richard Midgely (Langley, BC) ran in the 1500 meters. They finished in times of 4:08 and 4:12 respectively which are the fastest times ever turned in by a Thompson Rivers athlete in events held indoors. TRU head coach
Carmin Mazzotta says WolfPack athletes have covered the distance in faster times at outdoor meets in the past.
In the 400 meters, Kamloops resident Kelsey Bentz (who trains with the TRU team) ran the second fastest time in school history in 52.51. Midgely doubled back from the 1500 meters and ran a solid 53.11.
Sunday (Mar 1), saw the 800 meters run. Carrigan led from wire to wire as both he and Midgley were both below the 2 minute mark. Carrigan crossed the line in 1:59.64 while Midgley was second in a time of 1:59.80.
Mazzotta commented that this is the first time since the WolfPack started running indoors that a Thompson Rivers athlete has broken the two minute mark.
The athletes plan to continue to train towards competing in the BC Club championships in July.
