KAMLOOPS – In what was their final game of the 2021 season, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team tasted victory for the first time in a 1-0 win over the host UNBC Timberwolves.
"It was really awesome and a great way to see off the seniors," said head coach
Mark Pennington on the victory. "I don't know if I've ever felt that us as a team or I as a coach have ever worked this hard for one win in a season, because they've worked so hard and I'm just really happy that we can end on a positive and get a reward for all the work that we've put in."
A pair of standout performances from graduating players highlighted the win for TRU. Goalkeeper
Danielle Robertson made four saves for the shutout in the final game of her illustrious WolfPack career while,
Georgia Aldus buried the lone goal of the game from the penalty spot for the second marker of her career.
It was a back-and-forth contest that was eventually decided on a penalty kick. Just over an hour into the game hard work from first-year winger
Jessye Large led to her being pulled down in the box. Aldus stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the net to send TRU to their first win of the season.
The win also moved the WolfPack ahead of the Timberwolves in the Canada West standings. The Kamloops squad finish their season with a record of 1-8-3, giving them six points and a sixth-place finish in the West division.
"Just for the emotional piece, the win was really big to keep the players bought in to the process. We are a very young team and will continue to work through Spring," said Pennington. "Now that they've had their first competitive action, they're a bit more battle tested, and we can move on. I'm really happy with where we are in terms of moving forwards."
