KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team caught fire when they needed to most in a 77-60 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday night.
The victory is the first of the season for a young WolfPack roster that features eight of their 12 players in their first year of U SPORTS eligibility.
"The biggest thing is that we are improving, they don't know that we're improving but we are improving," said WolfPack head coach
Ken Olynyk on what this win meant to the team. "This doesn't mean a lot besides giving them justification for what they are doing every day in practice. We might lose the next six – who knows, but right now we've come so far and did what we had to do and I'm really happy for them"
The WolfPack scored 26 points while holding the Heat to just nine in the final quarter of play to complete a come-from-behind victory over their rivals from Kelowna.
Fourth-year guard
Megan Rouault led the way for the 'Pack. The product of Vernon scored 11 of the WolfPack's 26 points in the final 10 minutes of play as the team shot 47 per cent from the floor in the final frame.
"Megan was awesome, said Olynyk. "She's our leader, a senior player and she took a senior role in that fourth quarter and showed us what it takes to be a leader."
Rouault finished with a game-high 23 points while going 4-4 from beyond-the-arc. Not far behind Rouault was first-year guard
Jessica Orr who scored 13 points on 3-4 shooting from long-range. Rounding out the WolfPack top performers was
Anneke Cairnie who racked up nine points and 16 rebounds.
Kelsey Falk had a massive game for the Heat. Playing in 35 minutes on the night, the second-year forward scored 13 points while adding a ridiculous 19 rebounds. Surprise Munie had 16 points while Aiko Williams chipped in with 12.
Trailing for much of the game, the WolfPack battled back from an early 20-8 deficit to get within three at the end of the second half thanks to a 9-2 run to end the second quarter.
UBCO stretched that lead back out to nine with three minutes left in the third quarter before a 12-3 run and a
Maggie Fehr layup with 11 seconds left in the frame sent the teams into the fourth tied at 51.
From there it was all WolfPack as they dominated the fourth en route to the victory.
These teams will be back in action inside the Tournament Capital Centre tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. and the game can be watched live on canadawest.tv.
