Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Steer tallies twice as T-Birds sweep WolfPack

KAMLOOPS – Two goals in the first 11 minutes of the game proved to be the difference as the visiting UBC Thunderbirds collected a 3-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team Saturday night.

"It was always going to be a battle, we put in a monumental effort last night and we don't quite have the healthy bodies and depth at the moment," said WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington. "I actually thought we dug in really well, we were decent in the opening parts of the game which was something we talked about because I didn't think our start yesterday was great."

Danielle Steer was once again the story for the Thunderbirds. The fourth-year forward scored the first and third goals of the night to run her season tally to four goals in the opening two games. Katalin Tolnai scored the other goal for the Thunderbirds, with Sophia Ferreira adding an assist.

Making nine saves on the night, Danielle Robertson made some history in the TRU net. The fourth-year goalie from Courtenay recorded career save number 294, moving her into fifth in the all-time Canada West record books.

"She made another couple of really good saves. Two, maybe three world class stops and then two more really good saves on top of that," said Pennington. "And that's what Danny gives you, she's such an exceptional shot-stopper and we talk about getting the rest of her game together and there's no reason if she doesn't add some small pieces, that she can't be a Canada West All-Star.

The Thunderbirds struck first just nine minutes into the contest.

A corner kick was played in by Aislin Phillips and during the ensuing scramble in the box, Ferreira was able to find an open Steer who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

An insurance marker came just minutes later. A turnover deep in the WolfPack half allowed Tolnai to break in on goal where she scored her first of the season.

From there a young WolfPack squad was able to work their way back into the game, creating chances throughout the remaining 80 minutes but the damage from the reigning national champion Thunderbirds was too much to overcome.

Steer added her second of the game off a penalty kick and ran the final score to 3-0.

The win moves UBC to 2-0-0 on the season. While the 'Pack, who sit at 0-2-0, didn't pick up a point from their opening weekend there we plenty of lessons learned and some strong play from a youthful TRU squad against a strong opponent.

Next up for TRU it will be an Interior rivalry match-up when they head to Kelowna to face the UBC Okanagan Heat. UBC meanwhile will return to Vancouver for a bye week followed by their first home games of the season where they will face the UNBC Timberwolves.
