KAMLOOPS –
Sam Flowerday led the way for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team that earned a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon in the TCC.
Flowerday was electric in the game, putting down .432 per cent of his attacks for a career-high 21 kills while also adding a pair of aces and six total blocks.
"There was a point where I don't think he made a mistake for about 15 swings," said WolfPack head coach
Pat Hennelly. "It's huge, you're not giving the other team points, he's making big kills and then he goes and gets it done from the service line. That was an all-star performance tonight."
Alongside Flowerday,
Rylan Ibbetson had eight kills while
Corbin Ockerman finished the night with seven kills and nine blocks.
Blocking was key for the 'Pack in the game as they recorded 17 blocks to the Wesmen's 7.
"We aren't a huge team but we've worked on being stable in the block and allowing our defence to do some stuff as well," said Hennelly. "The guys have bought in over the last two weeks and it showed tonight."
After rolling through the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20, the WolfPack stumbled in the third, allowing a scrappy Wesmen team to take the third set 25-23.
"It's a good lesson for our young guys that you never give up in this league and that's how you get tough," said Hennelly. "It's the toughest league in the country for a reason and you can't take a break."
The WolfPack were able to rebound in the fourth and close out the game. With the teams tied at 11-11, TRU was able to put together a 9-1 run during which they four blocks to put the match away.
"Great performance overall and you need sweeps in this league to start making moves and that's a huge win for us tonight," said Hennelly.
The 'Pack will have their bye next weekend before they return to action on November 18 for a pair of games in Kelowna against the UBC Okanagan Heat.
