WolfPack narrowly fall to Griffins in first semester finale

KAMLOOPS – The MacEwan Griffins repaid the favour as they beat the Thompson River WolfPack women's basketball team 69-61 inside the TCC on Saturday night.

One night after picking up their first win of the season over the Griffins, TRU was again right with MacEwan but fell just short of picking up the victory. MacEwan found their success in the paint with over 50 rebounds compared to 34 from the WolfPack.

"We battled all the way through the weekend, and this is the first time we've put together eight quarters," said WolfPack women's basketball head coach Todd Warnick. "At the end of the day, it was eight quarters of effort, eight quarters of energy and eight quarters of defense. We're a young team and I'm proud of what they accomplished today."

Danijela Kovacevic led the WolfPack in both minutes played and points with 15 points and four defensive rebounds. Megan Rouault and Makeba Taylor both pitched in with 10 points each with Rouault earning five rebounds and Taylor shooting over 60 per cent from the field.

Mackenzie Farmer led her team for a second night with a game-high 20 points to go along seven rebounds. Shannon Majeau had herself a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Hayley Lalor would be the only other player on the court to earn a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

MacEwan came out to start the first quarter looking to seek vengeance from the night before. Toni Gordon and Mackenzie Farmer set the tone early for the Griffins, both with six points and one assist while Farmer also picked up two rebounds. As the WolfPack tried to settle into the game, they saw two points from seven different players but MacEwan held a 21-15 edge after the opening ten minutes.

The WolfPack started to settle into the second quarter as they chipped away at the Griffin's lead. Seven-straight, including a Rouault three-pointer, got the game within three but MacEwan prevented the 'Pack from taking the lead as Hayley Lalor drained eight points in the quarter.

Danijela Kovacevic came out of the half-time on a mission, hitting two from beyond the arc to go with a free-throw. Solid defence from the 'Pack helped tighten up the score line but seven more points from Farmer kept the visitors in the lead.

Taking momentum from the third quarter, the WolfPack dominated the beginning stages of the fourth quarter. Makeba Taylor who had six points early on, would tie the game for the WolfPack at 58-58 at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter but the WolfPack couldn't shut down the Griffins offence. Shannon Majeau assured the Griffin's victory with six points in the quarter to go with four more from Farmer.

Both teams will now head into their winter break. The Griffins sit at 2-8 while the 'Pack hold a record of 1-7.
