KAMLOOPS – The perennial powerhouse Trinity Western Spartans picked up a weekend sweep over the Thompson River WolfPack women's volleyball team courtesy of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-19) victory inside the Tournament Capital Centre.
TRU got better and better as the match went on and played their best set of the weekend in a third and final frame where they made the Spartans fight hard to earn the victory.
Brooklyn Olfert again led the way for the 'Pack by going 10-25 in her attack attempts on the night while also adding a game-high 10 digs.
Hadley Schmidt had 19 assists while rookie
Kate Lamothe tied her career high with six kills and served a pair of aces.
Ansah Odoom with nine kills led the Spartans while Savannah Purdy had eight kills and a whopping eight service aces for the visitors.
Aces was an area the Spartans controlled in the game, racking up 18 to the WolfPack's eight. The visitors also outhit the 'Pack .365% - .120%.
The first set was tight early before the Spartans ran away with things late. A kill from
Brooklyn Olfert made the score just 9-8 in favour of TWU but a 7-2 run sent the visitors into the technical timeout with a six-point lead. Purdy had six aces on seven serves as the Spartans jumped out to a 22-10 lead before taking the set 25-15.
After a second set that saw the Spartans hit .391 per cent as a team to take a 25-16 victory, the WolfPack found their footing in the third set.
The visitors jumped out to an early 10-5 lead and looked to be in the drivers set at 20-15 before TRU responded. Lamothe had an ace and
Faith Christensen put down a kill with Olfert adding two as the WolfPack made it close at 23-19 before a pair of kills from Purdy put the game away.
The WolfPack will now get the chance to recuperate during a bye next week before finishing their 2021-22 season with a pair of games inside the TRU Gym Feb. 25-26.
