WolfPack complete weekend sweep with win over Pronghorns

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team put the finishing touches on one of the most successful weekends in the program's Canada West history with a 3-2 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday.

The win over the Pronghorns combined with their 2-0 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars yesterday gave TRU the full six points from their weekend trip to Alberta. Winning back-to-back games for the third time in team history, the WolfPack also moved their current undefeated streak to four games - the best run in program history.

"The team has worked really hard and they are starting to see the fruits of all their hard work. Not just four games undefeated but three wins and a tie, those are big points for us and we are really happy with the direction we are going," said WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington.

Ainsley Grether, Camryn Curts and Katie Chun all tallied for a WolfPack team that looked to be sailing to a comfortable 3-0 victory before some late drama.

Hailey Slobodian and Alexa Evis responded for the Pronghorns, with both of their goals coming in the final six minutes of the game.

Grether opened the scoring 23 minutes into the game. The fourth-year midfielder started the play with a ball to Curts, Curts cut a pass from the wing into the middle of the 18-yard box to Emily Clark who fired a shot on net and while her strike was stopped Grether was in the perfect spot to score on the rebound.

The WolfPack doubled that lead with just seconds left in the first half.

Clark did an amazing job to twice slide and keep the ball in-bounds while fighting off defenders. She was able to feed the ball to Curts who buried the ball into the top corner of the net.

"Clarky is the most honest, hard-working player I've probably ever coached – she just doesn't stop, she runs until she can't go anymore," said Pennington. "That goal was the epitome of who we are, we grind and never give up. Clarky's work-rate and determination is really what it came down to, combined with a great finish."

In the 75th minute Katie Chun made the lead 3-0.

Curts fought off a pair of defenders at the edge of the 18-yard before poking the ball into the path of Chun who tucked the ball away for her second goal in as many games.

That goal from Chun would prove to be incredibly important as the Pronghorns came storming back late to score a pair of goals but TRU was able to escape with the 3-2 victory.

The WolfPack now sit at 3-2-1 on the year and are currently fourth in the Pacific Division standings. TRU will return home next weekend when they will take on the Trinity Western Spartans and Fraser Valley Cascades inside Hillside Stadium.
