Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – Battling at the top of the Pacific Division standings, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team will play their final regular season home games inside Hillside Stadium this weekend.
Taking on the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday and the Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, kickoff will happen at 7:00 p.m. on both nights.
Holding a record of 6-2-1 on the year, the WolfPack are locked in a fight with the UBC Thunderbirds (5-2-0) for first place in the division. UBC currently holds a slim edge in winning percentage – the factor that determines men's soccer standings due to an uneven conference schedule.
The WolfPack earned a split at home last weekend, bouncing back from a Friday night 1-0 loss courtesy of the Calgary Dinos to take down the Alberta Golden Bears 2-1 on Saturday.
Mikkel Rosenlund and
Dylan Hooper scored the goals Saturday night, with
Patrick Izett picking up a pair of assists.
It will be a chance at revenge for the 'Pack on Friday night when they take on the 5-3-2 Spartans. Trinity Western handed TRU a 1-0 defeat earlier in the year, putting an end to the 'Pack's three-game winning streak to start the season. In their last action the Spartans defeated the MacEwan Griffins 3-0 before playing the Dinos to a 0-0 draw.
TRU will be looking to complete the season sweep of the Cascades on Saturday after grabbing a 1-0 win over them in Abbotsford earlier this season. The game will be a big one for the 2-4-1 Cascades that are currently on the outside looking in at the Canada West playoff picture.
Honoured on Saturday night are members of the 'Pack that will go down in the program's history book.
Despite being a defender, Pirretas is among the program leaders in points (5th all-time with 12) and goals (5th all-time with 8). The long-time captain of the WolfPack has earned Canada West honours in all four of his previous seasons with the 'Pack. Twice being named a first team all-star, once a second team all-start and also to the all-rookie team.
The man behind the biggest goal in program history so far, Banton was also named to the conference all-rookie team in 2017 – the same year he scored the goal that sent the 'Pack past the York Lions at the U SPORTS Championship.
The most decorated goalkeeper in program history, Gardner will leave the 'Pack holding the program record for wins, shutouts and save percentage.
Joining the 'Pack from the Capilano Blues, Favaro has nine points in 30 games played for TRU.
A transfer from San Diego State, Sagno has played 26 games for TRU while fellow transfer Sharma has suited up for the 'Pack six times.
