Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Vikes hold on to blank WolfPack

KAMLOOPS – One night after pulling off their biggest win of the season so far, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team were unable to strike lightning twice in a 1-0 loss to the UVic Vikes.

Matthew Pearse was the goalscorer for a UVic team that outshot TRU 6-3 in the contest.

Patrick Izett and Alesandro Comita were both dangerous in attack for TRU, while Svyatik Artemenko made five saves in the losing effort.

The result comes just 24 hours after the 'Pack knocked off the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds and moves them to a record of 6-7-1. With one game left to go on their regular season schedule, TRU continues to hold steady in the Pacific Division's fourth and final playoff spot.

"Unfortunately the first half wasn't one of our best," said WolfPack head coach John Antulov. "I don't know if we were tired or what but we probably weren't as sharp as we'd like to be. The second half we definitely turned that around and were much better, but just weren't able to put the ball into the net."

Victoria meanwhile, jumps to 9-3-2 and appear to be a certain lock for second place.

After Pearse opened the scoring early, the 'Pack had their best chance to score of the first half at the 20-minute mark.

Comita forced a turnover in the UVic half and slid the ball over to Izett who quickly let go a turnaround shot that was stopped by Callum Weir.

The 67th minute mark saw TRU get their best chance to score in the second half. Once again it was off a turnover as Denzel Marican pressured the UVic defence before sending the ball to Izett who laid the ball off into the path of Harry Taylor but once again his effort was stopped by Weir.

The 'Pack will now have one final game left to secure their hold on fourth-place and their spot in the playoffs when they travel to Edmonton to face the MacEwan Griffins on Sunday, Oct. 22.

"It's critical, the good thing is that we have our destiny in our own hands which is what you want," said Antulov. "For us to have the opportunity to go there and get ourselves into the playoffs is something that you always want. It's going to be a tough game obviously, MacEwan is a good squad but if we play like we did the last three games - and a half of this game - then good things will happen."
