Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Bisons take down ‘Pack in five for second-straight night

QUICK FIRE
  • It was another night of heartbreak for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team that went the distance in a 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10) loss to the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday once again led the way for TRU with 22 kills on the night. Middles Corbin Ockerman and Gavin Margerison each had a strong showing for the 'Pack with nine and four kills respectively while also recording four blocks apiece.
  • Ben Carleton responded with 16 kills for Manitoba while Eric Ogaranko added 12 and eight blocks with Sammy Ludwig recording 41 assists.
  • Manitoba controlled the battle at the net on the night with 36 blocks to the WolfPack's 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU hit .450 per cent in the first set to help them cruise to a 25-17 victory. Flowerday and Ockerman both had four kills and a solo block courtesy of Margerison put the set away for TRU.
  • After the Bisons responded to eke out a close second set, the WolfPack regained their control of the game in the third. TRU held Manitoba to hitting just .031 per cent and controlled the latter portion of the set thanks to a pair of kills from Flowerday and a service ace from Sam Elgert.
  • Manitoba did just enough in the fourth set to force a fifth and final frame. The Bisons jumped out to a 20-15 lead before Margerison sparked a 7-3 run with another solo block to cut the lead to just one. That was as close as the 'Pack would come however as Manitoba was able to squeak out the set win.
  • The fifth set belonged to Manitoba. The visitors hit .571 per cent as a team and jumped out to a 9-3 lead en route to the victory.

NOTABLE
  • The match was the fifth time in ten games this season that the 'Pack have gone to five sets.
  • TRU is now 4-6 on the season.

QUOTABLE – WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly.
  • "We talked about our energy levels, this is a difficult part of the season and we had a lot of guys just not bringing energy within themselves. We talked about that all year and this is a perfect example of 'hey, you got to will yourself sometimes to get back in the game' and I think we did a very poor job of that."
  • "Flowerday and some other guys were engaged so I thought it was a little bit better than last night but at key pivotal moments guys were just quiet and in their heads - which is a bad place to be on the court.
  • "We have to reset and get back to business. I don't think that was our best volleyball and we played two five-setters so we have to take that as a positive sign."

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will remain in Kamloops and get set to end their first semester slate when they host the Trinity Western Spartans inside the TCC next weekend.
