KAMLOOPS – On a night where they honoured a long-time standout, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team were unable to end their season with a win in an 89-45 loss to the visiting Manitoba Bisons.
In her final game as a WolfPack student- athlete, senior
Megan Rouault led the charge for the WolfPack with 15 points.
Kelsey Cruz pitched in with eight points and four rebounds while
Nya Derkach had six rebounds to go along with four points.
Kenziah Brothers had a game high 18 points for the Bisons, shooting 70 per cent from the field. Brynn Endicott capped off her season with a double-double, draining 15 points and picking up 10 rebounds. Lauryn Manaigre shot over 66 per cent from the field to drain eleven points.
The Bisons set the pace early in the game through the play of Endicott and Autumn Agar who had eight points each in the first quarter. Rouault kept the 'Pack in the game with six points of her own, but the Bisons - who were shooting an efficient 65 per cent from the field - jumped out to a 28-12 lead at the end of the first.
Manitoba continued that momentum, jumping out to an 11-3 point run to start the second quarter. Six Bisons players found themselves on the board in the second frame with Manaigre draining two three-pointers. The WolfPack disturbed the Bison's flow with points from
Maggie Fehr and Daniela Kovacevic, but the Bisons pushed through to the halftime whistle holding a 51-20 advantage..
Manitoba scored the first eight points of the third quarter with the 'Pack responding with two buckets of their own. The action picked up in the last three minutes of the third, as both teams went back and forth. Brothers paced the Bisons with seven points while Rouault drained another five for the 'Pack. Both teams continued to trade points, with the Bisons heading into the final quarter with a 72-31 lead.
TRU had their best quarter of the night in the fourth but it wasn't enough to cut into the Bisons lead as the visitors went on to take the game 89-45.
The game was the final one of the 2022-23 season for a WolfPack team who honoured Rouault after the game. The fifth-year from Vernon tallied 508 points, 106 steals and 340 rebounds in the over 90 Canada West regular season games she appeared in.
