Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – With just two games left to go in their 2022-23 season, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team will look to end their year on a high note when they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to Kamloops.
Hosting UBC (16-6) at 7:15 p.m. on Friday and 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, the 'Pack (7-15) will be trying to knock off the No. 10 ranked team in the country. The games against UBC will mark the fourth time in the past five weekends that TRU faces a nationally ranked squad.
It was a difficult test for the 'Pack last weekend, as they travelled to Langley for a pair of games against the No. 1 ranked TWU Spartans. It was the youngsters for TRU that shone against the Spartans. Rookies
Libby Meldrum,
Lucy Millam and
Addison Witkowski all stood out. Meldrum racked up 27 assists, Millam nine kills and Witkowski seven kills but the 'Pack were unable to pull off an upset in a pair of losses.
UBC enters the weekend after two losses of their own. On home court the Thunderbirds we defeated by the Winnipeg Wesmen - a squad that TRU split with early in the year - by back-to-back scores of 3-1.
These two teams split the final weekend of the year last season, with TRU earning a big 3-2 win on home court.
The games will be the final in the university careers of four outstanding members of the 'Pack.
Studying education,
Hayley McNaught is a product of Woking, AB who has spent five years with the program. Tallying 83 blocks over her WolfPack career, the middle has suited up for a career-high 66 sets over the 2022-23 season.
A psychology major from Victoria,
Erin Mutch will be graduating after five years with the 'Pack. Coming into the weekend with 77 Canada West regular season games to her credit, Mutch has excelled this season with a career-high 191 kills.
Returning to the team after a stint playing professional volleyball in Slovakia,
Abby Spratt has written her name throughout the program record books. Originally from Calgary, Spratt suited up for TRU from 2016-20 and again for the 2022-23 season. She is 12th in CW history with 134 career service aces and 18th with 2,615 assists.
Rounding out the graduating players is
Siobhan Toal. An English major from Edmonton, Toal excels both on the court and in the classroom where she is a five-time Academic All-Canadian. With the program since the 2018-19 season, Toal has played nearly 100 sets in her time with TRU.
By The Numbers
2-3: The 'Pack hold a record of 2-3 against UBC over the last five times these teams have met in Kamloops.
865: The four graduating members of the 'Pack have played 865 Canada West regular season sets for TRU.
34: Abby Spratt's 34 aces are the seventh-most in the conference this season.
