Sagno goes pro, joins Gardner Down Under

KAMLOOPS - They say 'two is better than one' and Glenorchy Knights FC in Australia is taking that quite literally as they announced the signing of their second WolfPack alumni, Daniel Sagno.

"It's always been a dream of mine to play professional football, but it feels a bit more special getting this opportunity at the end of my collegiate career," said Sagno.

After spending his first year of eligibility with San Diego State University, Sagno decided to take a step away from the sport, but that didn't last long. Missing the sport, Sagno found a new home here in Kamloops with the TRU WolfPack men's soccer program.

"I was fortunate enough to have John (Antulov, head coach of TRU) believe in me and, essentially, give me an opportunity to showcase my talents. I was sold on the culture and identity of the program he was trying to build and wanted to play a part in it."

Sagno made an immediate and lasting impact for the program. Since making the transfer over to TRU, he has featured in 41 appearances, including 37 starts. In his career with the WolfPack, the midfielder has recorded four goals and three assists and was an in integral part of their U SPORTS National Championship run this past season.

Sagno joins former WolfPack goalkeeper Jackson Gardner who announced his signing earlier on in the year. Glenorchy Knights FC play in the 2nd division of the National Premier League (NPL) Tasmania. Founded in 1957, the club is based in Hobart, Tasmania. The team won the league two seasons ago and finished fourth in the previous season.

Looking to make another immediate impact, Sagno is hoping to take what he learned with the WolfPack and bring it to Australia. "Something that I've learned from my time at TRU is to fight and battle," he says. "Nothing's going to be given to you, that feeds into the core foundation of our program here and who I am as a player."

Utilised as both a midfielder and a winger for the WolfPack, Sagno was known for his flair and his technical ability. His pace also caused a lot of issues for opponents as they struggled to keep him contained. He leaves as a core of players that have created a new standard of excellence for the men's soccer program.

Sagno has played at the highest levels throughout his soccer journey earning call ups to the Canadian national team at the U15, U17 and U18 levels. Before heading down to play Division 1 NCAA soccer in San Diego, he also played in the 2015 CONCACAF U17 Championships, where he started all six matches and scored two goals. This desire to play at the best level makes this next step in his career an easy choice. "It's always been a dream of mine to play soccer at the highest level," said Sagno. "With this opportunity I am one step closer."
