Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

‘Pack end opening weekend with split

KAMLOOPS - It was all UVic Vikes all the time Saturday as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Island-based squad.

"Probably a little of fatigue and complacency today," said WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington. "We were patting ourselves on the back after last night's performance and today UVic came out flying, pressed us high and we didn't really adjust to the speed of the game and good teams will punish you."

Caylah Lemon scored the lone goal for TRU while both Emma Skalik (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ruby Nicholas (1 goal, 3 assists) racked up four points for the Vikes.

UVic came out flying and two goals from Skalik in the first 20 minutes of play gave them the early edge.

Lemon's goal appeared to pull TRU back into the proceedings when her long-range free-kick fooled the UVic keeper and found its way into the back of the net to cut the lead to just one, but just three minutes later Skalik tallied again to clinch her hat-trick.

Forced to spend the week on the road due to wildfires in the Interior, the wear and tear of the early season grind seemed to catch up to TRU in the second half of the game.

Erin Jensen, Taiya Scorey and Nicholas all scored in the second frame as UVic went on to claim the victory.

The result brings a close to the opening weekend of the season for a TRU squad that defeated Mount Royal University by a score of 3-1 on Friday night, giving them three points on the season.

"You can take more lessons from your failures than your victories so we'll take a big lesson today and watch some gametape," said Pennington. "We said if you're going to lose a game like this. it's better to do it early in the season rather than later. The trick now is to bounce back, come out strong and get a good week of training in and make it right on the field next weekend."

Next up for TRU is another road game as they are set to face the UBCO Okanagan Heat (1-0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 2 in Kelowna with a scheduled start time of 3:00 p.m.
