Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack defeat Dinos to make history

KAMLOOPS – For the first time in program history the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team have defeated the Calgary Dinos after they claimed a 2-1 victory at MacArthur Island.

Coming into the contest TRU was 0-5-2 in their CW history against Calgary with 3 goals for and 26 against.

Alexis Virgo and Berea Woldeyes provided the goals for TRU while Sofia DiGiacomo responded for Calgary.

Cassandra De Amaral made six saves in the WolfPack net while Katie French and Anna Demarbre split time for the Dinos and made a pair of stops each.

TRU came out of the gates swinging, taking advantage of a slow start from a Calgary squad on night two of a road swing.

After putting pressure on early the 'Pack scored two goals in a seven-minute span in the first half.

Alexis Virgo scored her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute from a long-distance free kick. Launching the ball from just inside the halfway line, Virgo floated a ball that sailed just over the outstretched hand of French and into the back of the net.

TRU doubled their lead in the 30th minute.

Emily Clark sent a cross into the 18-yard box that squeezed through a pair of Dino defenders and to a waiting Woldeyes who powered it into the back of the net.

"I couldn't have asked for any more, the first half I thought we were absolutely fantastic," said WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington. "Calgary are a top team in the country so to go 2-0 up was great. The girls gave absolutely everything and I couldn't be more proud of them."

Calgary had their best chance to score on the first half right at the stroke of halftime.

Rachel Barlow sent in a long free-kick that was heading towards the top corner before De Amaral was able to tip it out of danger.

Calgary began to take command of the game in the second half, sending wave after wave of attack at the WolfPack defence.

Substitute Grace Moore nearly scored in the 77th minute when she got onto the end of a cross but her effort trickled just wide of the net.

Just one minute later the Dinos found their breakthrough. Barlow sent in a corner kick and DiGiacomo rose highest to power the ball into the back of the net.

Calgary kept pressing for the equalizer but a combination of outstanding defending and De Amaral in the WolfPack net preserved the victory for TRU.

"When you play against a team like Calgary who have the wingers that they have you have to have a plan and we stuck to the plan," said Pennington. "They went out and executed that plan against some very good players, I thought Virgo was top class and even scored an unbelievable goal. Raiya (Rumo) gave us what Raiya always gives us and I thought Allie Shiyuk and Bella Geremia both played fantastic too. Cass made some big saves when she needed to as well."

Not only was the win an historic one for TRU, it also was an important one in the Canada West standings. The 'Pack now sit at 4-4-1 after earning a pair of victories this weekend.

For Calgary, the result drops them to 5-2-2 on the season. They are currently in firm command of second place in the Prairie Division.

TRU will hit the road next weekend when they travel to face the TWU Spartans and UFV Cascades. Calgary will also play a pair of road games next weekend when they face the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatchewan.
