Spartans deal WolfPack defeat in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team saw their four-game undefeated run snapped Saturday afternoon as they fell 3-0 to the visiting Trinity Western Spartans at Hillside Stadium.

Thomas Powell, Malcolm Kengni and Xander Roxburgh scored for Trinity while Jordan Marwood made a trio of saves for the shutout. Svyatik Artemenko made four stops in a losing effort for TRU.

The game featured two of the stronger defences in the conference with TWU entering the game allowing just seven goals through their opening ten games of the season while the WolfPack were on a 180-minute shutout streak.

After a back-and-forth first half Powell opened the scoring just minutes before the break.

Forward Luca Alberti received the ball at the edge of the TRU 18-yard box and laid off a pass perfectly in front of Powell who unleashed a curving effort that found the back of the net.

TRU came out swinging to open the second frame but after an excellent run courtesy of Alesandro Comita went for nought, the Spartans were able to double their lead.

Alberti again played provider, sending a ball into Malcolm Kengni who scored his first of the season.

Ryan Lewis nearly pulled one back for TRU in the 68th minute but his outstanding free kick that went up and over the wall en route to the top corner of the net was parried away by a diving Marwood.

Roxburgh provided the insurance marker on a TWU penalty kick in the 90th minute of play.

With five games remaining on their regular season schedule, the WolfPack now hold a record of 3-6-1 on the year. TRU are just holding onto the fourth and final playoff spot in the CW Pacific Division with the UBC Okanagan Heat right behind them. TWU meanwhile strengthen their grip on third place with a record of 4-2-5.

TRU is back at home for the final home games of the regular season next weekend when they host the UBC Okanagan Heat for a pair of contests. The Spartans meanwhile will play a home-and-home set with Fraser Valley Cascades.

Mikkel Rosenlund was named the man of the match for TRU for his work both going forward and defending for the 'Pack.
