Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

No. 9 Spartans pull away from ‘Pack for victory

QUICK FIRE
  • They took a set early but that was as close as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team would come in a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-14) loss at the hands of the TWU Spartans.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Reigning U SPORTS Player of the Week, Sam Flowerday led the way with 12 kills for TRU. Matthew Hamilton followed up with ten kills while Gavin Margerison finished with two aces and five blocks.
  • Henry Rempel was efficient for TWU, finishing the night with 17 kills on just 26 attacks. Cory Schoenherr added another ten while Anselm Rein finished with 39 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity Western came out strong and quickly jumped out to a 9-3 lead after a service ace by Rempel. TRU was able to close the lead to two points, 20-18 after a TWU attack error. But it was as close as the WolfPack could get. The Spartans finished the set with a 5-3 run to take the opening set 25-21
  • The two teams were even early, but with TRU up 7-6 the WolfPack took control of the second set. TRU used a 9-4 run, capped off by a Sam Elgert kill to take a solid 16-10 lead. The Spartans responded and cut the lead to one point, trailing 21-20. But the Spartans could not get closer as the WolfPack's Gavin Margerison kill finished the set giving TRU a 25-22 win and evening the match at 1-1.
  • After the Spartans took a close third set they ran away with the match in the fourth to finish the night with a 3-1 victory.

NOTABLE
  • The result is a big one in the CW standings as TWU moves to 10-7 and into seventh in the conference while the 'Pack fall to 9-8 and one game out of the playoffs.

QUOTABLE – Pat Hennelly, head coach
  • We struggled to get any kind of rhythm going. We got out-dug in our gym, we served okay but we got out-served in our gym. We've always said that our serve and defence have to be on for us to play with some of the more physical guys and you know Rempel was a lot to handle today, he had a monster game. So credit to Trinity because they definitely out-hustled us tonight.
  • It's been a heavy, emotional road leading up to this. We are going to regroup tomorrow and I think we'll be cleaner and tighter in terms of our execution.

UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will be back in action tomorrow evening inside the TCC at 4:15 p.m.
