Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Resilient WolfPack lead late but can’t defeat TWolves

QUICK FIRE
  • A young Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team that just keeps getting better came within one minute of victory Saturday night inside the TCC before eventually falling 64-60 to the UNBC Timberwolves.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Danijela Kovacevic poured in 18 points for the 'Pack while Kelsey Cruz added 11. Rookie Kate De La Mare was a force to be reckoned down low with 13 rebounds and four blocks.
  • Rebecca Landry tallied a game-high 22 for UNBC while going 7-16 from the floor. Adaiah Tupas-Singh knocked down a trio of treys for 10 points and Svetlana Boykova had 12 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A cold start from the floor for the 'Pack allowed the TWolves to jump out to an early lead. Adaiah Tupas-Singh knocked down five points early as UNBC scored the first 11 points of the contest. Buckets from De La Mare, Sydney Vollrath and Cruz got TRU back into the contest but it was the visitors leading 16-9 after ten minutes.
  • Neither team was able to grab the momentum in the second quarter. Tupas-Singh and  Landry both had four points for UNBC while Sydney Vollrath responded with four of her own for TRU but the deficit remained seven points at the half.
  • Kovacevic came to life in the third quarter for the 'Pack. The third-year guard from Serbia had 10 points in the frame but the play of Landry prevented TRU from making any major inroads into the lead as she responded with 10 of her own to give her 16 through three quarters. The score was 51-45 in favour of UNBC entering the final quarter.
  • Bouyed by a loud home crowd in the TCC, TRU played their best basketball of the night in the fourth quarter. Five-straight points from Kovacevic gave TRU their first lead of the night with just 1:20 remaining but Viktoriia Filatova responded with an end-to-end layup for UNBC to give them back the lead that they wouldn't surrender en route to the 64-60 victory.

NOTABLE
  • De La Mare's four blocks set a new program record for a rookie as she continues to write her name in the program record books.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will hit the road next weekend when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas.
