Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

'Pack battle every step of the way against Wesmen

QUICK FIRE
  • Three of the four sets needed extra points as the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team fell in an extremely close 3-1 (28-30, 26-24, 28-26, 25-22) loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen on the road.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday had another impact game for the TRU with 17 kills and a pair of blocks. Matthew Hamilton continued his strong start to the second semester with 16 kills and seven digs while Rylan Ibbetson rounded out the main offensive attack with 15 kills and a trio of service aces. Setter Sam Elgert racked up 46 assists in the game.
  • Both Nigel Nielsen and Isaiah Olfert recorded 17 kills for the Wesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 'Pack outlasted the Wesmen in a marathon first set to take their lone frame of the match. The WolfPack had a trio of set points at 24-21 but were unable to put away a feisty Wesmen squad. Winnipeg roared back to lead 28-27 but a kill each from Ibbetson and Flowerday gave TRU a set point that Ibbetson finished off with an ace.
  • Winnipeg flipped the tables on TRU and managed to squeak out the win in the second set. The teams traded points all the way to 24-24 before a TRU service error and Wesmen block allowed them to pull out the 26-24 victory.
  • The third set once again went to extra points. A resilient WolfPack squad fought off three set points but were unable to complete the comeback in a 28-26 loss before the Wesmen wrapped up the match in set four.

NOTABLE
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 17 the WolfPack will hold a celebration of life for member of the 'Pack Owyn McInnis who passed away after a motor vehicle crash in November. The TRU, Kamloops and volleyball communities are all invited to help honour his memory inside the TCC at 4 p.m.
  • The 'Pack now sit at 5-7 on the season.

QUOTABLE – Pat Hennelly, head coach
  • Another great match for our guys. Credit to Winnipeg for playing great down the stretch in sets two and three.
  • Time to regroup and get ready for another emotional week.

UP NEXT
  • TRU will return to the TCC for their first home games of 2024 next weekend when they play host the MacEwan Griffins.
