Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heat outlast WolfPack second half push

QUICK FIRE
  • They tried to roar back in the second half, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team couldn't pick up the victory in a 2-1 loss to the UBC Okanagan Heat on the road.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Ryan Olak scored his second of the year for TRU with Jonathan Rinaldi earning the assist. Luca Ortu made a trio of saves in the defeat.
  • Aiden Synnuck and Jaise Shaw provided the markers for the Heat. Goalkeeper Ronan Woodroffe made four stops.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A first half that saw both teams fire a pair of shots towards net ended 1-0 in favour of the hosts.
  • Synnuck scored just 15 minutes into the game when he snuck in behind the WolfPack defence and went in on net all alone before firing top corner.
  • The early portion of the second half belonged to TRU. The 'Pack send forward wave-after-wave of attack and only a penalty-shot save courtesy of Woodroffe in the 58th minute kept the 'Pack from evening the score.
  • TRU refused to go away however, and finally found the breakthrough in the 64th minute. Rinaldi sent in a corner kick that Olak rose highest for, and the second-year forward nodded the ball into the back of the net for the goal.
  • Unfortunately for fans of the 'Pack, that tie was short-lived. Ortu made a massive breakaway stop in the 75th minute of play but couldn't duplicate that effort just one minute later when Shaw broke in all-alone on net and fired the Heat to the victory.
  • TRU pushed for another goal late but couldn't find it as they fell by a score of 2-1.
NOTABLE
  • The two teams were even with five shots on goal apiece.
  • Ortu was chosen as MVP of the game for TRU.
  • The win gives UBCO the early lead in the annual battle for the Presidents' Cup – a competition between TRU and UBCO that takes into account their head-to-head games in soccer, basketball and volleyball.
  • The WolfPack have three games remaining in their season. They'll finish 2024 at home next weekend when they host the UNBC Timberwolves.
UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will get the chance for revenge on their Interior rivals when these same two teams do battle tomorrow night in Kelowna with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
