Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Rinaldi and Coulibaly’s volleys fire WolfPack to victory in season finale

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team made sure to end their season on a high note as they defeated the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 3-1 at Hillside Stadium.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rookie Abdel Coulibaly fired in a pair of goals for the 'Pack with Jonathan Rinaldi adding the other. Ranjeet Brar, Soren Kaczor and Liam Freathy all registered assists for TRU. Playing in the final game of their WolfPack careers' graduating student-athletes Olivier Jumeau and Mikkel Rosenlund both contributed to the win. Jumeau made three saves for the victory while Rosenlund played 90 solid minutes at centre back.
  • Adam Korduner fired in the goal for UNBC with Hagon Kim supplying the assist..
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU was all over the Timberwolves in the first half. That pressure nearly paid off in the 15th minute when D'Andrea played a beautiful ball down the win, Coulibaly won the race for that pass but his effort dragged just wide of the net.
  • The Timberwolves best chance to score in the frame was a near mirror image of their goal from last night. Hagon Kim stepped up to a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box but this time his shot blazed over the crossbar.
  • The WolfPack threatened again in the 30th minute of play. Ranjeet Brar brought down a ball in the 18-yard box and twisted his way around a pair of UNBC defenders but couldn't find the target with his powerful shot.
  • TRU's breakthrough finally came just ten minutes into the second half. D'Andrea played a ball forward that was flicked on by Ranjeet Brar to the back post where Rinaldi was waiting to meet the ball with a first-time volley that flew into the top corner of the net.
  • UNBC equalled the score against the run of play in the 80th minute of play. Korduner put on a burst of speed before sending in a cross that took a deflection off a TRU defender and past a helpess Jumeau.
  • The WolfPack refused to be denied victory on the night however. With just minutes left to go Coulibaly connected on a left-footed volley from 25-yards out that flew into the bottom corner.
  • Coulibaly doubled his tally and provided the insurance marker deep into extra time after he finished off a great run from Freathy.

QUOTABLE (head coach, John Antulov)
  • I thought we did a good job of controlling the play but finishing has been a problem for us all year and then in the second half we finished off those chances.
  • The main thing was that we wanted to make sure our fifth-year players went out on a real positive note and I'm happy the boys were able to do that.
NOTABLE
  • Rosenlund leaves the WolfPack with 50 career Canada West starts to his name.
  • Jumeau has been named a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian in all six of his years with the 'Pack. He has already earned a bachelor's degree from TRU and is currently pursuing a Master's.
  • Coulibaly ends the season as the WolfPack's leading goal-scorer.
  • The match was the final of the season for both squads.
