Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack play Cascades to stalemate on the road

QUICK FIRE
  • They led twice on the night, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team couldn't hold off a UFV Cascades comeback in a 2-2 tie in Abbotsford.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Esi Lufo and Kat Stewart supplied the goals for TRU. Alexis Virgo earned an assist on Lufo's goal.
  • The Camryn Lyon to Jasdeep Dhaliwal connection proved fruitful twice for the Cascades, with Dhaliwal tallying twice off of corner kicks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TRU took the lead 33 minutes into the game. The 'Pack had bodies forward for a set piece and while the Cascades cleared the first attempt, Virgo sent the ball right back into the box where Lufo was able to loop a header over the stranded goalie.
  • That scoreline held all the way until the 67th minute when the Cascades pulled back even. After some sustained pressure Lyon sent in a corner kick that Dhaliwal was first to as she powered a header of her own into the net.
  • Kat Stewart put the 'Pack back in front with just ten minutes left to play. A ball through to Juli La Rotta was stopped by the Cascades' goalie, but Stewart put herself in a dangerous spot and the defender's clearance bounced off the second-year forward and in.
  • With the WolfPack appearing destined for victory, the Cascades struck back once again. In an almost carbon copy of their first goal, Lyon found Dhaliwal from a corner kick and the score was even.
  • Both teams had a clear chance to win the game in extra-time but Addison Chen in the UFV net and Cassandra De Amaral for TRU came up big for their respective squads to keep the contest tied.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 3-5-2 on the season with the result as they continue to fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division. UFV is just one spot behind them at 2-5-2.
  • Stewart's goal was her first of the season.
  • After starting their Canada West tenure with four-straight losses in Abbotsford, TRU has now earned consecutive ties against UFV on the road.
  • The goal moves Lufo to ten career points – good enough for third in the program's Canada West history.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • We were undone by set pieces again, which has unfortunately been our Achilles Heel – it's two goals tonight, two goals to UBC and two goals to MRU – so it's something we've identified and talked about, we just need to be a bit tougher.
  • I thought when Fraser Valley tied it up the first time, we showed some real fight and spirit to go and find the go-ahead goal so credit to the team for doing that.
  • We just couldn't hold out, I thought we were sloppy in possession and our game management wasn't good so we end up conceding another corner kick and those are the really narrow margins between winning a game or not.
  • We'll dust ourselves off. We said that coming away from this weekend with four points was our objective and that's still in our control, we've just made it a bit harder having to go and get three points off Trinity Western
  • On the play of defender Raiya Rumo She was everywhere, and the other really important piece she did was really get on our players to keep pushing on and driving. I thought she was very solid defensively and a really important part of what we did.
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will remain in the Lower Mainland for another game tomorrow night against the TWU Spartans in Langley. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
