Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

No. 6 Spartans sweep ‘Pack in the TCC

QUICK FIRE
  • They held a four-point lead in two of the three sets, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team couldn't find a way to beat the TWU Spartans late in sets as they lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) inside the TCC.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday, Dylan Annala and Rylan Ibbetson all had eight kills for the 'Pack. Rookie libero Brandon Johnson, making his Canada West debut, was great passing the ball with 27 service receptions in the game.
  • John Obi and Piers De Greef both tallied 14 kills for the Spartans. Jackson Corneil led the way defensively for TWU with four block assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A 4-1 run in the middle of the frame powered by two kills from WolfPack middle Gavin Margerison allowed the hosts to jump out to a 9-6 edge. An ace from Flowerday gave the 'Pack a commanding lead at 19-15 before things turned for the Spartans. Piers De Greef keyed a 7-1 TWU run that saw the visitors come all the way back to lead 22-20. Annala and Flowerday responded with kills of their own but a dump from setter Anselm Rein ended the set with the visitors pulling out the 25-23 victory. Flowerday and Annala both had four kills in the frame for TRU.
  • The second set belonged to the visitors. TWU hit .308 per cent as a team and fired in four service aces to run away with a 25-16 victory.
  • TRU did their best to respond in the third. Jakob Leinemann, Walker Sodao and Flowerday combined for a block that gave TRU the lead at 8-4. It didn't take long for the Spartans to respond however and two-straight blocks helped the visitors snag a lead at 13-12. The teams traded points all the way to 20-20 but it was the Spartans that held their nerve late. TWU scored five of the final six points in the game as Obi finished the night with two-straight kills to power the Spartans to victory.
NOTABLE
  • The loss moves TRU to 2-5 while the Spartans improve to 6-3.
  • Flowerday's eight kills move him to 954 on his CW career. He is just 46 kills away from becoming the second player in program history and 29th in conference history to break the 1,000 kill mark.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • We had a bad weekend last weekend where we failed to take our moments to put sets away and I think that happened again in the first set, we made couple mental mistakes and unfortunately our confidence level right now isn't high enough to overcome that.
  • I liked our start and the way we responded in the third set.
  • Right now we are kind of looking around when the score gets to 20. Last year that was when we played some of our best volleyball and and now ever single guy is still thinking about the last play. We are stuck trying to play catchup and volleyball will punish you if you can't reset.
  • The energy was better than last weekend for sure, but we were playing a higher quality opponent.
  • I thought Flowerday came out really good and Dylan started well.
  • For Brandon Johnson that's one of the best debuts I've seen. He was by far our best passer today. They absolutely tested him early and he met the moment – I thought he was exceptional.
