KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's soccer team is excited to announce their latest recruit for the 2025-26 class, in Kamloops' own Luca Cupello.
Born and raised in the Loops, Cupello is a talented winger who attends Sa-Hali Secondary.
"One of the things we liked about Luca was his ability to take players on. He's very much an attacking player, very good technically, good on the 1v1, quick, strong, so you know we really hope he's going to add a real offensive threat for us," said WolfPack head coach
John Antulov.
Cupello describes himself as "A very passionate player who has a lot of love for the game and will always give you one hundred percent effort to win for the club. [He] hopes to bring a lot of energy to the team."
Antulov said that one of the attributes Cupello possesses that impressed him was his motivation. Stating that "Continually seeing him work on his own just shows that he has the drive to want to get better. We continually see him at the fields, and trying to get touches on the ball so you know, that obviously bodes well for him and wanting to get to the next level and succeed."
Cupello played for Kamloops Soccer Quest from the ages of 5 to 13 before transferring over to Kamloops Youth Soccer Association and choosing to stay with a local club. Cupello said he "Wanted to show kids that you don't need to play for those high-end teams to be successful. It's all about hard work and putting in hours of your own time to get better and become the best player you can be."
Cupello won athlete of the year at Sa-Hali in grade nine which he then followed up by making the Summer Games team. He was awarded the Golden Boot at the Summer Games tournament in Prince George, BC.
Cupello has chosen to bring his athletic achievements to TRU because he says, " Being a Kamloops guy this means a lot to me to represent my hometown and brings a lot more emotion and passion into the game while playing for my hometown. This is a great opportunity to play for my hometown team after growing up here my whole life."
When Antulov was asked about the development of soccer in Kamloops, he expressed "It's huge to continually see the work that's being put in to make Kamloops kind of like a soccer hotbed. So, to start seeing players come from all different clubs and academies, it's great to see and we want to make sure it just continues to grow."
Cupello is looking forward to also continuing his education at Thompson Rivers University where he plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
