Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

2023-24 campaign comes to an end for an extraordinary WolfPack squad

QUICK FIRE

  • A Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball squad that will forever be remembered for its resiliency and togetherness saw their 2023-24 season come to an end with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-25, 25-17) loss to the MRU Cougars inside the TCC.
  • In the battle until the very end, the WolfPack's playoff hopes were actually extinguished earlier in the night when the Manitoba Bisons were able to defeat the Saskatchewan Huskies.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • It was a historic night for Sam Flowerday who led the 'Pack with 20 kills. Flowerday moved past the legendary Brad Gunter for the most kills in a single season in WolfPack history. Matthew Hamilton added 15 more while graduating athletes Corbin Ockerman, Sam Elgert and Dylan VanSpankeren all made an impact in their WolfPack finales.
  • Luis Lange and Jacob Van Geel both had 14 kills for the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 'Pack came up clutch in the first set. TRU finished the frame on a 4-0 run that featured an ace from Rylan Ibbetson allowed the 'Pack to take a 25-22 victory.
  • It was the Cougars that won more of the close moments in an incredibly tight match however as they would reel off three-straight set victories to take the match.

NOTABLE
  • With 418 kills on the season, Flowerday now holds the WolfPack record and is number three in the Canada West single-season record books.
  • With 33 assists on the night, Sam Elgert finishes with 2273 in his university career, the second-most in WolfPack history.
  • The WolfPack end their season with a record of 11-13, which is their highest win total since the 2018-19 season.

QUOTABLE – Head coach Pat Hennelly.
  • "The guys played well, Mount Royal passed better today and once they get in a groove they are a hard team to stop. They knew they needed to win to move up in the standings we knew that Manitoba winning kind of ended our playoff hopes but again the guys battled and I give credit to them."
  • "I've been here for 18 years and I can guarantee that no other team that I've coached would get through this and I'm the most proud I've ever been of a group of guys."
  • "They showed up every day and did their best, I can't fault anything and the fact that there's only two teams this year that haven't lost a game this year 3-0 is us and Alberta is a credit to these. We've beaten nationally ranked teams and battled every time and I'm just proud of how they've handled this."
