KAMLOOPS – A talented goalkeeper is the latest addition for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team and head coach John Antulov with the announcement that Toran Rutherford will join TRU for the upcoming season.
 
"Toran is a good, young goalkeeper and is a guy that has the mindset and attitude of wanting to work hard and get better," said Antulov. "I think he's going to put the goalkeepers that we have under pressure with his work ethic."
 
From Abbotsford, Rutherford shines for both Abbotsford Senior Secondary as well as FC Tigers.
 
"I have always wanted to play soccer at the university level and over the last few months I have had a chance to meet the coaching staff and some of the players and it feels like a great fit," said Rutherford. "I am excited to be a member of the WolfPack."
 
Playing soccer since the age of five, Rutherford switched to the position of goalie when he was ten years old.
 
"Since that time, I have been working hard on my game and am dedicated to getting better each time that I am on the pitch," said Rutherford.
 
Making the move to the B.C. Soccer Premier League when he was 13, Rutherford quickly moved up to the FC Tigers U-21 team at just 15 years old.
 
"I saw Toran when he came for a visit here to TRU and trained with our group," said Antulov. "I saw some really good things and he is someone who I thought is only going to continue to get better and develop."
 
Now playing adult Division 1 soccer with the FC Tigers Youth Elite team, Rutherford – who stands at 6'1" – plans on studying science at TRU and boasts a sparkling GPA.
 
"Those are the type of players that we want to bring here, are guys that not only excel on the pitch but that do well in school and he fits that," said Antulov.
 
Qualifying for the BC Soccer Provincials for each of the past two years, Rutherford captured Top 16 MVP honours in 2022 and was also the goalkeeper MVP for the Calgary First Touch Football Combine.
 
"I am a team player who gets the job done," said Rutherford. "When I step foot on the pitch, I am ready for the game - I am always following the play and leading my team both offensively and defensively.  I use my communication skills and distribution abilities to direct the play and help the team advance down the field.  I control my 18-yard box and am focused on performing to the top of my abilities every time to help my team achieve success."
