Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

Season comes to an end for WolfPack team that fought until the last point

QUICK FIRE
  • The 2023-24 season came to an end for a Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team that fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-16) to the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West quarter-final action Saturday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Playing in what will be the final game of her WolfPack career, Ema Palkovicova led the way with 10 kills in the match while also putting up six digs and a pair of blocks. Brooklyn Olfert added four kills and Kate Lamothe three. Libby Meldrum racked up 19 assists and a service ace.
  • Erika Vermette and Akash Grewal both had eight kills for UBC while Issy Robertshaw compiled 24 assists and four service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Palkovicova carried the offence early for TRU and got the game started with a trademark big swing from her left hand for the kill. The defending champion Thunderbirds quickly found their groove however and pulled away from TRU before a solo block courtesy of Olfert stopped the home team's run at 9-5. UBC led by as many as 22-9 before the 'Pack put together a run late. Substitute Kate Lamothe had back-to-back kills and a block alongside Faith Christensen but UBC was able to take the frame 25-13.
  • The WolfPack were as close as can be with UBC in the early part of the second set. Two kills from Palkovicova and one from Lamothe was capped off with a Meldrum ace that made the score just 8-7 in favour of the T-Birds. Once again the T-Birds were able to take control of the set however as they ripped off a 13-6 run to take a commanding 21-11 edge. TRU went on a 3-0 run of their own but weren't able to make up the difference in a set that went 25-14 for UBC. Palkovicova had five kills in the frame.
  • TRU hung tough in the third. Trailing 13-5 an ace from rookie Myah Cressy sparked a WolfPack run that was capped off with an Olfert kill to cut the lead to 15-10. UBC again had an answer and pulled all the way to match point at 24-13. TRU refused to do down without a fight and fought off three-straight match points with an emphatic block courtesy of Olfert and Christensen. That was as close the young WolfPack would come however as UBC pulled out the 25-16 victory.
NOTABLE
  • After making the playoffs just once in the program's first ten years at the Canada West level, TRU has now qualified five times since the 2015-16 campaign.
