Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heat double up WolfPack in season-opener

QUICK FIRE
  • They hung tough through 45 minutes but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team couldn't hold off the UBC Okanagan Heat en route to a 2-0 defeat to start their season in Kelowna.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Resilient defending from TRU in the first half kept things tied 0-0 heading into the break. Despite UBCO firing 11 shots towards net in the frame, a WolfPack backline of Alexis Virgo, Dwane, Geremia and Allie Shiyuk limited the Heat's scoring opportunities.
  • Scott scored in the 61st minute and Kolodziej provided the insurance marker 20 minutes later.
  • TRU pushed to get on the board late but were unable to solve Talia Gagnon in the Heat net.

NOTABLE
  • The win gives UBCO the early edge in the Presidents' Cup rivalry standings. A yearly competition between TRU and UBCO with points awarded for head-to-head wins between the two schools, the titles were split last season with UBCO capturing the women's crown and TRU the men's.
  • The game was the first of the season for both teams who will next meet on October 11 in Kamloops.

QUOTABLE (TRU head coach, Mark Pennington)
  • I thought for the first half we carried out the gameplan, we caused them some problems, won the ball back a lot and stretched their defence.
  • A combination of the intensity of the game and the heat caused us to run out of gas a little bit and then we stopped winning fights.
  • UBCO is a very good team, they're well organized and they are going to upset some teams this year.
  • We ran out of gas a bit and had a couple defensive breakdowns and the ball is in the back of our net twice. We didn't really create enough goal-scoring chances, we only had one corner kick which is telling.
  • On the positive side I thought we had some great minutes from Paige Dwane, Hannah Dhillon, Juli La Rotta and Sophia Branby – they all did well in their first U SPORTS game action.
  • We'll look at the game tape, dust ourselves off and we will be better going into next week against UFV and TWU.
UP NEXT
  • TRU will return to Kamloops and get set to start their home slate next weekend. First up will be a Friday night clash at 5 p.m. against the TWU Spartans during which $2500 of tuition credit will be up for grabs for TRU students
