Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Cougars triple-up WolfPack in second half

QUICK FIRE
  • They were with them the whole night, but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team couldn't find a way to fill the back of the net in a 3-0 loss at the hands of the MRU Cougars Saturday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Jonathan Walter had a goal and assist to lead the way for the Cougars. Finn Marshall and Mowbray Beghin provided the other tallies.
  • Abdel Coulibaly had two shots on goal for the WolfPack.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A tight first half ended as it started with the teams tied 0-0, though the WolfPack held a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The WolfPack's best chance to score came through Jonathan Rinaldi in the 35th minute. Ryan Olak laid off a ball to an onrushing Rinaldi who charged into the 18-yard box and unleashed a curling effort that forced Sjard Strauss into a strong save.
  • The Cougars came close to taking the edge right before the halftime whistle. Abel Nesibu went on a blazing run down the right wing and crossed in a ball that set Miguel Da Rocha up with a perfect chance on the edge the six-yard box but he scuffed his effort wide of the net.
  • The visitors opened the scoring with a moment of brilliance courtesy of Walter in the 64th minute of play. The midfielder was able to curl a free-kick over the WolfPack wall from 25 yards out, to find the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack sent forward wave after wave of attack to try and find the equalizer but it was the Cougars who secured the insurance marker with four minutes left to play. Da Roch flicked on a header that sent in Marshall all alone on a breakaway where he finished calmly.
  • TRU appeared to pull one back in extra time through the hard work of Dos Santos but their marker was ruled out due to offsides.
  • With just seconds left to go in the game Beghin ruled out any chance of a comeback with his first of the season.

NOTABLE
  • TRU moves to 1-5-0 on the season while the Cougars now hold a record of 2-1-4.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will head out on the road next weekend as they get set to face the Calgary Dinos and Alberta Golden Bears.
