Weekend Story
KAMLOOPS – Just three points outside the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division of Canada West women's soccer, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team will host the penultimate home games of their 2024 season this weekend.
With games against the UBC Thunderbirds (6-0) on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and the UNBC Timberwolves (1-5) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., the 2-4-1 WolfPack will face the teams at opposite ends of the standings.
The weekend is set to be a fun one for the 'Pack with both Puppies & Pints and KYSA night set to take over Hillside Stadium one Friday. Saturday will see the WolfPack host an Orange Shirt Day game in advance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The WolfPack earned a point at home last weekend, picking up a well-earned 1-1 tie with the UVic Vikes on Friday night before falling to the MRU Cougars by a score of 2-0 on Saturday.
Esi Lufo scored the lone goal of the weekend for the 'Pack.
UBC continued their dominant run to start the season with victories of 4-0 and 3-0 over the Trinity Western Spartans and the UFV Cascades. The Thunderbirds have allowed just two goals in the six games they've played this season.
The Timberwolves faced those very same Spartans and Cascades and acquitted themselves well in losses of 3-1 and 1-0.
TRU has played both of these teams already this year, falling in a narrow 1-0 decision to UBC and edging out UNBC by a score of 2-1..
3 Things
1: At the Orange Shirt Day game on Saturday there will be a number of important initiatives including a traditional opening – welcome as well as a halftime showcase by the Sage Hills drum group
2: KYSA Night on Friday will see FREE entry for all KYSA members as well as recognition of teams and player walkouts.
3: Friday will also be Puppies & Pints at the field! Dogs will be allowed inside Hillside Stadium and there will be a puppy race at halftime of the game with $150 in special pet prizes.
By The Numbers
1: The one goal that TRU held UBC to earlier in the year is the only time that the Thunderbirds have scored fewer than three goals in a game this season.
10: Currently tied with both Marisa Mendonca and Chantal Gammie, WolfPack captain
Ainsley Grether needs just one more goal to set the program's career Canada West goal scoring record.
18: TRU outshot UNBC 18-3 in their first meeting of the season.
