Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

No. 2 Wesmen bounce back to defeat WolfPack

QUICK FIRE
  • One day after pulling off a monumental upset, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team was unable to recapture the magic as they fell by a score of 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-17) to the No. 2 nationally ranked Winnipeg Wesmen.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Sam Flowerday led the 'Pack with eight kills in the match. Rylan Ibbetson and Mason Sodaro both chipped in four kills.
  • Isaiah Olfert tallied a game-high 14 kills with Jaxon Rose adding a further ten for Winnipeg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wesmen set the tone for the match early, dominating the first set en route to the 25-14 victory. The visitors hit .440 per cent as a team and put up four blocks as they controlled the frame. Flowerday responded with three kills in the first for TRU.
  • TRU kept things closer in the second but it was again the Wesmen's efficiency in offence that proved to be the difference. Olfert had eight kills in the frame as the visitors pulled away in the middle of the set and never looked back.
  • A back-and-forth third set was blown wide open by the Wesmen late. The teams traded points to 12-13 before Winnipeg ripped off an 8-2 run that gave them a lead they wouldn't surrender the rest of the way.
NOTABLE
  • The win was the first for the Wesmen in Kamloops since 2017. TRU was 5-0 in the last five games that the teams played in the Tournament Capital heading into today.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Pat Hennelly)
  • "We talked about it, we poked the bear last night. I'm sure Winnipeg wasn't happy with how they played last night and both teams had things to clean up from yesterday so I knew they were going to be better and that we could be better, but that wasn't the case for us."
  • "Their other guys besides #12 (Isaiah Olfert) came to play. #1 (Jaxon Rose) hit the ball really well, their middles tried to make a statement early in the game and that impacted the way we played."
  • "We just got quiet. It's never a good sign when we aren't talking and moving and the other team is rolling. Credit to Winnipeg, that's why they have a great record."
  • "Winnipeg definitely won the serve and pass battle tonight so that makes things hard on the setters. We have to be the team that passes and serves the ball if not better than atleast as good as the opposition."
  • Walker Sodaro had some spring in his step and he came out and was trying to run the offence, we had a nice stretch in that second set where we were rolling and then we just trailed away late."
UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will hit the road next weekend as they head to Edmonton to take on the perennial powerhouse Alberta Golden Bears.
