Pandas defeat ‘Pack in top 5 matchup

QUICK FIRE
  • In a game that pitted two of the top teams in Canada against one another it was the host No. 4 Alberta Pandas that took down the No. 5 Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-23).
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rida Erlalelitepe and Brooklyn Olfert had 12 and 11 kills apiece to lead the 'Pack with both also recording a service ace. Hadley Schmidt recorded 20 assists while Faith Christensen had both a solo and assisted block.
  • Abby Guezen led Alberta with 16 kills and five block assists.
  • In total the Pandas recorded 16 team blocks to TRU's six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a predictably close first set, with Thompson Rivers holding a slight advantage for the majority of the frame. The defence was incredible on both sides, as the teams managed to hit a cumulative .157 and the backrows of each squad were flying all over the court. However, down the stretch the Pandas were able to put together a remarkable 8-0 run to take the set 25-21. Guezen paced both squads with seven kills, while the ever-dangerous duo of Erlalelitepe and Olfert finished with four apiece.
  • After the Pandas dominated the second set 25-15, the WolfPack tried their best to respond in the third.
  • TRU was stronger to start the third, jumping out to an early 8-5 lead behind a couple kills and an ace from Erlalelitepe, and two straight aces from  Christensen. The Pandas good day would continue, however, as Guezen and Pool were the catalysts in a 14-6 run moments later to take a slim lead at 22-19. The 'Pack would make it a 24-23 game, but a Johnston kill iced the set and match 25-23.

NOTABLE
  • The loss brings an end to TRU's six game winning streak as they now sit at 10-3 on the season.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach, Chad Grimm)
  • "We just didn't have it tonight. We started okay and had a lead late in the first set and got stuck in a rotation and that's on me, I should have made a move earlier to try and break that up a little more."
  • "We had a real tough time getting past giving up that lead. The second set we just never found our rhythm."
  • "To their credit the team responded in the third and it was tight. We have to get comfortable in these situations. When the game is viewed as a big or meaningful game we need to rely on our system and be disciplined and find comfort in that. We weren't able to do that tonight so hopefully tomorrow we can respond and play a little bit of a cleaner match."
UP NEXT
  • These teams will do battle again tomorrow night (January 25) in Edmonton with a scheduled start time of 6:00 p.m. PT.
