Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Second half comeback sees WolfPack beat Heat

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's soccer team emerged triumphant over Interior rivals UBC Okanagan Friday night at Hillside Stadium with a 2-1 victory.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Matheus Lucas opened his TRU scoring account with the game-winning goal. Lachlan Will added the other marker for TRU with Ben Finley supplying an assist on Lucas' tally. Toran Rutherford made four stops in the WolfPack net to pick up his second win of the season.
  • Jaise Shaw scored UBCO's marker off an assist from Matteo Clarke. Ronan Woodroffe made a trio of saves in the losing effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UBCO held the lead after a back-and-forth first half. TRU had their chances to open the scoring early but the Heat found the breakthrough marker in the 20th minute of play.
  • Clarke sent a perfectly weighted ball forward to Shaw. Rutherford rushed out of his net to close down the angle and while the rookie WolfPack goalkeeper made the first stop, Shaw was able to follow up his rebound and nod it into the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack completely flipped the script in the second half with two goals in the span of two minutes.
  • Lucas scored first for the 'Pack with a header from the corner kick of Ben Finley that flew into the back of the net to knot things up in the 70th minute.
  • Then just over a minute later TRU took the lead for good as Will unleashed a long-range effort that skidded under Woodruffe and into the back of the net.
  • TRU had their chances to widen that lead even further but a third tally wasn't needed as Rutherford shut the door for the remainder of the night to allow TRU to pick up the 2-1 win victory.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach John Antulov)
  • "We will take a win any way we can get it. The second half was definitely a lot better, we scored some goals but there were some easy ones we missed."
  • "It was a good battle, both ways that's a typical UBCO vs. TRU rivalry game. It doesn't matter where you are in the standings it's going to be a battle."
  • "Now we just have to hopefully try and carry this over to tomorrow."
  • "We talked about needing to get forward and start attacking a little bit more and just trying to create shots on goal because we haven't been doing a lot of that, so it was nice to see some goals finally go in."

NOTABLE
  • The goal was the first in Lucas' WolfPack career.
  • With the win TRU moves to 2-10-1 on the season and keeps their playoff hopes alive. At the time of writing They sit two wins behind the UNBC Timberwolves for fourth in the Pacific Division with three games left on their schedule.
  • The game was the first in the annual Presidents' Cup competition between the two schools that tallies up the victories between the two in their head-to-head matches in soccer, basketball and volleyball.

UP NEXT
  • These same two teams will do battle once again tomorrow night at Hillside Stadium with a scheduled kick-off of 5:30 p.m.
