Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

Heat outlast WolfPack on Lufo’s record-setting night

QUICK FIRE
  • Knowing their playoff hopes were on the line, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team threw everything at net that they could but just couldn't find the crucial equalizer in a 2-1 loss to the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday,

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Esi Lufo set a new program record when she scored the lone WolfPack goal. Makenna Ford earned the assist on Lufo's tally.
  • Maria Georgacacos and Annika Gross scored for the Heat. Georgacacos also picked up an assist on Gross' marker for the two-point night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early WolfPack pressure nearly paid off in the 16th minute of play when Ford sent in a corner kick that Kat Stewart met with a header but her effort sailed over the bar.
  • UBCO opened the scoring in the 21st minute of play. A long ball forward was sent to Georgacacos who managed to get past the WolfPack defence and slip the ball into the back of the net.
  • The WolfPack equalized less than ten minutes later. Ford sent in another corner kick and this time it was Lufo who met the ball with a powerful header to send the ball into the back of the net.
  • The 1-1 scoreline was shortlived however as Gross finished off a nice Heat move to restore the Heat's 2-1 edge.
  • With their postseason on the line the 'Pack dominated play throughout the rest of the game. Lufo and Stewart both worked the ball into dangerous areas but it wasn't meant to be on the night as UBCO managed to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

NOTABLE
  • Lufo's goal was her ninth of the season, which ties her at the top of the Canada West leaderboard, and the 12th of her TRU career. With 12 goals Lufo is now the program record holder for career Canada West goals.
  • The 'Pack will honour graduating student-athletes Katie Chun and Allie Shiyuk prior to the contest tomorrow. Between them Chun and Shiyuk have played in more than 100 games for TRU and have 9 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian accolades.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will wrap up their season tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. when they once again face the Heat at Hillside Stadium.
