Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack storm back to defeat Griffins in five

QUICK FIRE
  • They needed all five sets but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack men's volleyball team did what they had to do to bring a pair of wins back to Kamloops with a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-7) victory over the MacEwan Griffins.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Alex Howard continues to shine throughout the early part of the season for TRU with 20 kills and just three attacking errors. Making his season debut Rylan Ibbetson tallied eight kills and four aces. Walker Sodaro was everywhere for the 'Pack with 39 assists, nine blocks and ten digs.
  • Fabian Breitenbach led way for MacEwan with 14 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack made just three attacking errors as a team en route to taking the first set. Howard had four kills and an ace from Ibbetson to make the score 22-16 in favour of TRU cemented the 'Pack's lead as they would take the set 25-19.
  • After the Griffins eked out the second and third sets, TRU responded with a dominant fourth.
  • An early Ibbetson run at the service line allowed the 'Pack to jump out to a 7-2 lead. Form there the WolfPack kept their foot on the gas as Parker Bailey had three kills down the stretch to help TRU secure the comfortable 25-14 victory.
  • The WolfPack kept that dominance going in the all-important fifth and final set. Setting the tone were the Sodaro brothers who combined for a block to give TRU the first point of the final frame. A kill from Alex Howard that stretched TRU's lead to 7-4 forced a timeout from MacEwan. The WolfPack came out of that timeout with another kill from Howard followed by a Mason Sodaro ace to take a firm hold of the set at 9-4. The 'Pack kept that advantage the rest of the way as Lincoln Wagner put the game to bed at 15-7 with a service ace.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly)
  • It was a great comeback on the road. Alex Howard had a game – 20 kills, 22 points with a great hitting percentage. It was nice to have our captain Rylan Ibbetson back. Parker Bailey was efficient and provided a spark in the fourth and fifth sets.
