Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack battle back but can’t get past Vikes

QUICK FIRE
  • The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's soccer team fought back after an early deficit but couldn't complete the comeback in a 3-1 defeat to the UVic Vikes Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Third-year forward Kat Stewart scored the goal for TRU. Esi Lufo tallied the assist for her team-high tenth point of the season. Floor Ursem made five stops in the game, including a penalty shot stop in the 70th minute of play.
  • Abby McDonald scored all three goals for UVic, tallying twice in the first half and once in the second. Ruby Nicholas had a pair of assists for the hosts. McKenna Jaine made four stops in the UVic net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • While TRU had a trio of corner kicks early it was UVic that opened the scoring ten minutes into the game. Nicholas made a run deep into the WolfPack 18-yard box before cutting a ball across the face of net to a waiting McDonald.
  • A flurry of chances just past the 30-minute mark for TRU nearly saw the 'Pack tie it. First Macyn Jolly rose highest to a pinpoint delivery from Makenna Ford but the resulting header was snagged by Jaine. Quickly after a neat combination play between Stella Klippenstein and Lufo ended with the latter unleashing a low effort towards net that Jaine was able to parry.
  • After McDonald doubled UVic's lead in the 36th minute of play, the 'Pack were able to pull one back.
  • Alexis Virgo played a long free-kick forward that Lufo was able to flick into the path of an onrushing Stewart and the product of Oshawa, ON needed just one touch to lift the ball over Jaine and into the net.
  • Despite TRU outshooting UVic 5-2 and holding a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, it was the hosts that held onto the 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • The 'Pack did their best to equalize with Bridget Baird and Mackenzie Lalonde both earning quality chances but it wasn't to be on the night as McDonald scored the insurance marker in the 65th minute of play.

NOTABLE
  • The result was a big one in the Canada West standings as the three points moved UVic into a tie with TRU for third in the Pacific Division on 15 points.
  • Lufo's ten points has her tied for second in the conference while she also leads Canada West with eight goals.

UP NEXT
  • The 'Pack will remain on the road as they travel to Vancouver tomorrow – Saturday, Oct. 4 – for a game with the UBC Thunderbirds that gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
