Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | TRU WolfPack

Impressive defensive effort sees WolfPack fall just short of comeback win over UVIC

QUICK FIRE
  • A gritty defensive effort and late charge from the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's basketball team brought them close but was not quite enough to overcome the UVIC Vikes in a tight 50-42 loss inside the TCC Friday night.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Micah Ramsay had the hot hand for TRU as the rookie poured in a career-high 11 points, including three makes from long range to lead the WolfPack in scoring. Olena Vasylenko added nine points and nine rebounds from the point guard position.
  • Makena Anderson paced the Vikes with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter was a defensive battle as a ferocious effort from TRU forced eight turnovers, including four steals (three from Kylee Koppes, and one from Morgan Eichenberger). UVIC was paced by Anderson with seven points, four rebounds, and three assists. The visitors led 18-7 after the first after hitting a pair of late threes to stretch their lead.
  • It was a late flourish from the 'Pack to cut into the Vikes lead just before the end of the first half. Holding Victoria scoreless for more than four minutes to end the quarter, Micah Ramsay keyed the late 9-0 run with a pair of three pointers. Olena Vasylenko capped of the late run with a deep straight-away three. TRU trailed 31-20 at half.
  • The WolfPack continued to show-out on the defensive end in the third quarter, holding UVIC to just 6 points on shooting 17.6 per cent from the floor. Hailey Merrigan was a difference maker book-ending the quarter for TRU with steals, as well as a block and an easy assist over to Koppes. TRU outscored UVIC 10-6 in the quarter, trailing 37-30 entering the fourth.
  • TRU would cut the Victoria lead to six points on a few separate occasions in the fourth but could not complete the comeback, falling 50-42. Ramsay continued the best game of her young career, hitting another corner three before stepping inside the arc for a mid-range two to finish with 11 points.
