Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | TRU WolfPack

WolfPack storm back to defeat Heat in five

QUICK FIRE
  • They needed all five sets but the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women's volleyball team secured the weekend sweep over UBCO with a 3-2 (25-13, 18-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-10) victory Saturday night.
DIFFERENCE MAKERS
  • Rida Erlalelitepe was dominant for TRU, securing a season-high 18 kills in the match. Middles Maria Dancheva and Myah Cressy were excellent all night. Dancheva tallied 10 kills and six blocks. Cressy added 10 kills on just 13 attacks for an outstanding .769 hitting percentage. Setter Libby Meldrum recorded 47 assists and six blocks.
  • Marija Josipovic and Natalie Funk both had 13 kills apiece for the Heat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The WolfPack dominated the first set. TRU hit .632 per cent as a team and fired in six service aces en route to the commanding 25-13 win.
  • From there the net two sets were all Heat however as the hosts bounced back to take the second 25-18 and the third 25-14.
  • Needing to win the fourth to continue the match, TRU found a response. Three kills from Erlalelitepe and two from Gent combined with a Cressy ace saw the 'Pack jump out to a quick 11-5 lead. TRU ended the frame scoring five of the final seven points thanks to three kills from Erlalelitepe and a block from Cressy to force a fifth set with the 25-20 victory.
  • The WolfPack came out swinging in the fifth frame and two kills each from Erlalelitepe and Gent helped the 'Pack take an 8-3 edge. From there the 'Pack were able to see out the match with Hail Ward putting down a kill for the final point of the match.

QUOTABLE (WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm)
  • Overall, I'm happy with tonight. We had some struggles early in the match and I think our middles kept us in it, Maria Dancheva and Myah Cressy were efficient and playing well.
  • After a pretty big win in the first, UBCO came back and played well. They had a really physical lineup out there, were serving tough and blocking well so they presented some challenges tonight.
  • We struggled to find our rhythm but credit the girls I think they found a way to turn it around in the fourth. Rida Erlalelitepe stepped up big in the fifth set, she was fearless and that's a good lesson for us in how we need to approach those situations.

NOTABLE
  • The result moves TRU to 8-2 on the season where they top the entire Canada West conference.
  • The victory also secured an important Presidents' Cup win for the 'Pack. TRU pulled even with UBCO in the head-to-head battle between the two schools as they are tied at 2-2-1 after two games each in women's soccer and volleyball and one game of basketball.

UP NEXT
  • The WolfPack will be back at home next weekend when they host the Manitoba Bisons inside the TCC. The game on Friday will start at 5:30 p.m. with Saturday's contest getting underway at 3:00 p.m.
